Academy Sports
Question. While out and about today I rode by a construction site here in town that's going to be an Academy S & O. I have never been in one before and was wondering if I should be excited about the grand opening or not? We already have a Dicks but it's not much better than Walmart. I have read posts here where yall have talked about big Dicks and little Dicks and was wondering if Academy has that same business model or is it more consistant in its mix like say a BPS. Are their house brands any good? Aggressive pricing? Knowledgable staff? etc etc Thanks in advance for any help. Feel free to snicker at the unintentional big-little double entendre
I went to their web-site and of course its hard to tell from that what they actually stock in the store.

Never been to one, but from what I've gathered, it's somewhere between as dicks and gander mountain when it comes to the fishing stuff. Not a whole lot more stuff then dicks, but more I think.
Pricing is suppose to be good... friends of mine in Bama describe it as "dicks only cheaper." Wish they'd build one in wisconsin!

One of the best things going for Academy is their house brand of hard baits. H20 Xpress baits are really nice and priced right. They carry a lot of Zoom, Yum, Big Bite Baits, and a little bit of just about everything else. They generally have more fishing stuff than Dick's and at better prices. I would take Academy over Dick's every day of the week and twice on Sunday. Academy stores carry a little bit of everything, fishing, hunting, camping, clothing, shoes, team sports, work out stuff...etc. They don't usually have the very top of the line stuff but do have a decent selection of everything.
Academy started in Houston, I think and are slowly expanding north and east. I have no less than 8 stores within an hour drive of me. I know C-rig just had a store re-open in his city and he was very dissapointed with their selection. Hopefully that was just because it was a new store. All my stores are pretty well stocked and they are all fairly close to the same. Here is this weeks store circular. http://academy.shoplocal.com/academy...toreID=2622183

we ahve one near me. it is great! they have some things i can't find at ol wally world. things like KVD line conditioner, some brand of hooks and line. they carry a wide assortment of line depending on how they stock. i have found that demands dictate what all a store will stock. the store i am speaking of is in gadsden. they have a good selection there and very little competion. so they will carry mroe stuff.
and YES, the H2O cranks are very good inmy opion. best bang for your buck i think. good color selestion too.

Ours just re-opened after being destroyed by a tornado. It's a bigger store now than it was but honestly it has a much worse selection. I am hoping that they eventually get their fishing department squared away with more selections because right now it is very weak. I will agree though that the H20 products are great for the money. All in all I am sure you will be happy you have an Academy.

There's an Academy about a mile from my house, and a Dick's about 10 minutes up the road. If their positions were reversed and the Dick's was closer, I'd drive right by the place on the way to Academy and not even glance at it on the way by. Our Academy has 10x the fishing stuff Dick's has, plus a good selection of boating stuff, camping, grilling, etc.

I was in an Academy while at Wheeler last year and you can now buy on-line from Academy, which is good for us no'fers as there aren't any Academy stores north of the Mason Dixon. Their line of H2O crankbaits look really good and I bought a couple dozen to give them a try this year. They strongly resemble a Lucky Craft with some really good colors. The store doesn't compare to a BPS or Cabela's but is a step above Dick's.

I like Academy better than Dick's. Seems to have a better selection of fishing equipment in the local stores.

Agree with everyone above. There is both an Academy and Dick's in Augusta, GA (25 minutes tops, right across the ol savannah) The Dick's really sucks, even compared to the other ones I have been in. Compared to the ones in Raleigh its like they are confused what they are trying to do. The Academy is much better, the H2O stuff looks good and I have a little, but havent fished it. But their prices are usually pretty good on everything else too. You will enjoy it.

The only thing different I can add is, at least the Academy closest to me carries Viscious brand line. BPS has apparently stopped carrying it for some reason. It is a great place to get a gift for the Mrs. Most of my and the Mrs. clothes and shoes come from there, as well as camping and hunting gear. BTW, H2O hardbaits are really good and well priced. Most of my lure and terminal tackle $s go to Academy.
Hope you enjoy the store as much as we do.

I prefer going to academy over bps. True, selection is nowhere near as large, butunless theres a sale, bps is much more expensive.
And the h2o baits, including the spinnerbaits, are high quality. So be excited.

I have a BPS less than maybe 4 miles away....But I drive further to an Academy(s) most of the time...Like Billy stated BPS is pretty high on a lot of their stuff, and Academy seems to always have something on clearance.
....and that pleases me.

U second what has been said about Academy's. Dick's in Hattiesburg has a big selection of Zoom, but that is about it. It was a let down other than finding Cavitron Buzz Baits.
