7-3-10 fishing trip
Dad came over early Saturday, and he and I went out for the first time together in the new-to-me boat. We had a good time, but there wasn't a whole lot of fish catching going on. I got on 14 1/2 incher, then later on a 12 1/2, but that was all the bass action. Dad did somehow manage to land a big bowfin on a jerkbait, though. Unfortunately, all 6 points on the treble hooks tangled in its gills, and trying to ease them out just made it worse. He was floating on his back when we left. I felt bad for killing it, but it was unavoidable.

Well at least you got out there and wet a hook!! WTG. In Texas, there was a rule that you were supposed to disembowell the bowfins before putting them back in the water. I don't know if they changed the rule, but it was definitely in there for many years.

Sounds like a good trip, the fishing has been tough for me recently with the water so hot. Did you go to Ross Barnett? How's the new boat running?

This was on the Pearl River, north of Ross Barnett. The only pattern I could find (and it was a pretty pitiful pattern, too, if 2 fish even count as a pattern...) was chunking a frog into heavy pads close to deep water. Water temp was between 88 and 90, and the holiday boat traffic kept us rocking and rolling after about 10 o'clock. My next trip I think I'll head a little farther south, to the northern end of Barnett. I've heard that the drops at the edge of the creek channel are the ticket during the summer.
The boat's running great...a little slow to start first thing in the morning, so I'm planning on doing a shock treatment of SeaFoam and changing the plugs before the summer's up. If you ever head this way, let me know as far as you can in advance, and we can go bumbling around the Rez together...you know what they say about blind pigs and acorns...
