Great day for a newbie
Well, Sunday afternoon/evening was a great day for me, by far my best day fishing in my short career. Went to a local pond with a friend to fish for some bass. I previously had only been able to catch them with a Texas rigged worm, but today finally landed 2 with a Rapala (I guess it is called a swim bait or crank bait) so I was happy about that. I lost 1 with it though.
Started using my worm again and had real good luck with it, caught and landed 7 Bass, and lost 2 due to my line breaking on both times! I was using 10 LB test, so I do not know if I had a couple of big fish or if my line just had some weak spots?? Both fish looked pretty big as I was able to get them to the shore and almost out of the water, and both broke my line down near the reel, and not at the hook/tip of the rod. Most of them were medium size bass. Anywhere from 1 to 3 LBs or so. But this is the biggest one I caught, it was 22 inches long and 4 1/2 LBs! I was stoked as this is the biggest bass I have ever caught. I am really starting to feel comfortable and confident in that Texas rigged worm. And the worm color....junebug, it seems to always work.

Thanks guys, a lot of helpful tips and advice has helped a lot.
Yeah, I was able to put my fist in it's mouth. It did not have much of a belly, so we were thinking that maybe it just laid eggs??

yup, or (this would be bad) there might be a virsu if it is way past the spawn and you catch fat ones also. Just a thought...

WTG Twin! That's great! Looks like you have started to develop confidence in a few baits, too, which is a very good thing. Keep up the good work!

No, I threw him back. When/if I hang an 8 or 10 LBer, I might hang em up.
Reb, I have a lot of confidence in the Texas rigged worm/lizard now. It is actually my favorite, and I think working a worm is the most fun. I have to force myself to try other things now so I can get better at those too.

Good choice that you won't regret. Put 'em back and catch 'em when they're plump and when they've lived their life cycle keep one for a trophy. 1 to 3 lber's make a nice addition to a dinner plate on special occassion but 95-99% of the time let 'em live. Only time I don't release 'em is if the pond owner asks me to keep certain fish (ie. he's overstocked crappie and also wants me to rid it of snapper turtles). |
