Default Reel for Flippin'

Since we just finished building my flippin' stik, the baitmonkey has set about finding me a new reel. The baitmonke has been pulling my arm for that new Skeet Reese Revo, but that's way out of my price range.

I've been looking at a couple different reels including the Quantum Accurist PT, and the Revo S. I know I probably won't be needing something that can cast a long way, so I won't be getting a too expensive reel. And besides, if I do cast some jigs with the rod, jigs are easy to cast anyways.

What reels do you guys use for flipping? what would be a good reel in the $80-125 range?

Thanks guys,

BB

I have been using a Pinnacle Tara. Its getting close to being retired, but has done a decent job. For flipping I just want good freespool and a powerful drag. Some say use a highspeed reel to maximize the time the lure is in the water, but I've never been one to specialize that much.

I saw a Abu Silvermax at walmart today that was 59$ and looked to be very similar to the Revo - I suppose you could check that out too.

Most reels will serve you as flipping reels, if you want something a little bit more specialized I recommend the Shimano Castaic, it has Instagage system ( lift the thumbar to engage the spool without having to turn the handle ) and upgrade it with Carbontex drag pads to give it a little more muscle and smoother, more responsive drag. Not exactly in your price range but a very good reel indeed that not only works for flipping but also as a general purpose reel, it casts like an old Curado or Cronarch SF.

Shimano Brush Buster the best there ever was. Got it the other day off ebay. The best Flipping only reel ever made. You can find them on Ebay for like 15 to 30 dollars. Many people baught them not knowing how to use them since they were flipping only reels. So allot of the time you can find them brand new in boxes with instructions. If you find one used allot of them hav'nt scene much use.

BB - You have tons to choose from at that price range and you know everyone here has a favorite. Pick a brand you like or have the most confidence in. Look for the features you think are important (for example....how much line can be picked up per handle revolution) and get it at the cheapest price.

Currently I use a Shimano Scorpion. I also use a Curado. I'm getting a Revo Premiere next week (got a deal for $180).

I.m planning on buying a Revo SX for flippin. I have a Revo S and love it. I like the idea though of having the megnetic breaks on the SX for flippin.

I prefer the magnetic brakes over the centrifugal too. The Midias I bought has both and takes a little getting used to.

Cheaper Reel: Shimano Citica.

Definitely Worth The Extra Pesos: Daiwa Fuego. My personal flippin' reel -sweet-. I also use this combo, (Fuego and Avid 7'6'' MH/Mod), for casting frogs. Work great for both.

Thanks guys.

3d, I have a BPS Johnny Morris Signature reel with the dual brakes, and I think it is the easiest to cast of all my reels.

Buzzie, I can't afford the Fuego or any reel that expensive. I'm gonna have to borrow some money from someone so I can get my reel before Guntersville. I may, if I mow the yard a few more times, be able to afford the Revo S, or one of the Max reels (thanks for the idea WTL)

Thanks again guys,

BB

I second the motion...for the Castaic. It's smooth and the Instagage system is pretty foolproof (When I remember to use it.) Plus, it meets one if my absolute requirements; It weighs less than nine ozzies.
I don't do a lot of flipping but I practice enough to remain 90% combat ready. With a properly tuned Castaic I can be on target in short order when the situation demands it.
The reel is well-suited to other applications as well, in that it handles just like a 'Rado 200BSF so far as cast/retrieve characteristics are concerned.
The only change I MIGHT like to see is a switch to a 7:1 retrieve ratio but that's just IF a change was needed...and is isn't.
The Castaic has been around for a long time. There must be a reason...right?

Just replaced my flipping reel. Picked up a NIB Quantum Accurist 501CX for less than $60 total on eBay. I like a left handed reel for my flipping rod only saves having to swap hands. Plus this reel has the flipping switch which I also like. Left handed and flipping switch, I can flip and set the hook without having to do any thing. Very smooth and has magnetic brakes.
