Default First Crappie

I caught my first crappie yesterday. It was around 8 inches. Surprisingly, it was caught in one of the neighborhood retention ponds. I was fishing for bass and caught around 8 LM (largest just under 2#). I lost what would have been a PB (around 3#) near the bank when he jumped and shook the hook.

Back to the crappie. I was slowly dragging a 4 inch slow sinking curly tail worm along the bottom (around 5 feet deep). I felt several bumps but the fish didn't seem to take the whole bait. Then I saw the line move and set the hook. Luckily the crappie took the bait deep in the mouth past the "paper" because I tried to cross the fish's eyes. Too my surprise, it was a crappie when I landed him. I just smiled and took a mental picture since I didn't have a camera. Sorry no pics guys.

I am hopefully getting a fish cleaner and filet kit for Christmas, so I plan on keeping them next time I go.

Just a tip on crappie. The colder the water the better the meat. We won't even eat crappie that we catch up here if they're not caught during spring or ice fishing. Also, crappie spoil quite fast in the freezer, so you be better to fillet them and eat them the night they are caught. but we know people that fish for them all year long and eat them. It's just our preference not to eat them from warmer water.
