As long as a given tool functions properly it should do a particular job. Cheap rods and reels will catch fish, better rods and reels will be smoother, more sensitive and more pleasurable to fish. Will they catch more fish than a cheaper fully functional set up? Maybe they will to a certain extent, a better rod will allow you to feel subtle bites better. You do reach a point of diminishing returns though, that $1000 combo probably isn't going to catch more fish than the $400 combo. If using high end gear makes you happy though and you can afford it, more power to you!

That's the funny thing about price. Just because a reel costs twice as much, it isn't necessarily twice as good.

Like Jrob said, more expensive gear normally is more of a pleasure to fish with. I've noticed, the brakes are not as effective on lower end reels as higher ones. This means less backlashes and/or more casting distance. Now, comparing a $200 reel to a $400 reel, I'm sure there couldn't be that much difference.

i have 2 kvd tours the burner and the power reels there 314.00 a piece and then i have the st.croix mojo rod 120. i just got the new abu vendetta 7"3 rod $100. 6"6 st.croix trumph with a quantum acs500 saltwater reel $300. i also have the enegry spinning setup on a mojo rod. Around $170. thats just my bass setups. I have probaly 800 more in rods for trout fishing and ocean and river fishing. Just like anything else have to have the right tools for the job. The reel are def worth the money i can throw them all day with easy go out for 4 hours with a 450 dollar setup then go out with a 130 dollar set up i promise you will see the diffrence.

I still believe the appreciable difference between a $150 and $400 is not worth the difference.

As far as expensive fishing gear goes, I own several higher end rods and reels but I did not pay retail price on any of them (except my Loomis GLX). True, with top of the line gear you get a pretty paint job, a sleek look, and usually enhanced performance, but having fished with Shimano Calais, I can't honestly say they are worth the 200$ price difference than lets say the Revo Stx, which I consider to be a very solid middle of the road reel.

I'd sure like to afford a $400 reel so I could see for myself if it does any better than my Citica or Revo.

You know, you can buy a violin for $5,000 that will perform. You can buy an absolutely top of the line new violin for $50,000 that will perfom superbly. Or you can buy a Strad for $5,000,000 that will perform sublimely. A decent violin player will probably be able to appreciate the difference between the $5,000 and the $50,000 instrument whereas the difference in performance quality between that and the Strad would be completely lost on him or her. That doesn't mean there is no difference. I'm like that with fishing equipment. I can tell the difference between low end and good quality but I doubt that I would be able to appreciate the absolute top end equipment. So for me, top end is kind of a waste. But again, that doesn't mean it's not worth it - just not to me.
