Default Hidden Weight Spinnerbait

I've fished with a couple fo these before, I think the idea is you get a heavier body with the profile of a smaller one for using in heavy wind, gettign deep, finicky fish, etc. Anyone use these things a lot?

Yes they are awesome, I always like a small spinnerbait, but its hard to burn them without them turning over unless they are heavy. This fixes the problem and they also have a great orientation on the fall when you pause them. I use this brand myself www.aceintheholelures.com

I never thought of the Tungsten, but those things are pricey! Like Dwain said though, the body acts as kind of a keel, so that can't hurt, and yeah, John's stuff rocks

Trying to decide on what sizes to have the mold made in - 1/4 to 1/2 oz or 1/2 on up to 1 oz

1/4 might be a bit small for a "hidden weight" application. I'd start at maybe 1/2 and do that, 5/8, 3/4 and 1 oz.

maybe even through in a 7/16ths or a 3/8ths

I like that one as well, Stamina sells those, called a Keel weight, supposed to be able to burn it and it not roll, but I've never tried it.

I've got my mold on the way, I'll post some pics once I get some painted

If you downsize the willowleaf on most spinnerbaits, they dont tend to roll as much when burning..I found that out after getting my hands on one of Rebs spinnerbait, I discovered most of my spinnerbaits weren't heavy enough and the blades were one size to big to burn, I used to watch them in clear water work fine one time, the next time roll on me.

I still got the original Berkley Jay Yelas spinnerbaits. Really caught alot of fish with these baits , like the clear blade for the clear water I fish. P N J

Been changing the blades for burning for years, but sometimes you need the blades to be bigger to match the size of the shad that the fish are feeding on, and the hidden weight design addresses that issue.

P n J, I bought about 5 of those things several years back for a buck each at big lots. Never caught a thing on them. Ended up switching the blades, there floating around somewhere now.

BTW, why was the barb on the other side of the hook on those?

WTL, Berkley made the a whole line of gold point hooks designed like that. THat spinnerbait is a great early spring bait when the bass are back in the creeks. P N J

Have you noticed any difference in hookup% with that type of hook?

Nope, I haven't seen any problems with the way the barb is positioned on hooks.

changing the size of the blades in the above mentioned post is the wrong thing to do.. in that situation you need to add more bulk to your blade 2 skirts or a skirt unbrella and a bulky grub..

That technique is a good one as well for certain situations, but your really doing a different thing with that. When you bulk up the skirt and trailer, you have lost the small appearance of the bait. The bait also does not want to run very deep with a lot of bulk, at a realatively high retrieve speed. The hidden weight is a good idea that doesnt change either the bulk of the bait or the size of the blades, but gives the desired results.
