If you have a Dicks Sporting Goods near you, their better house branded line of rods are excellent and a tremendous value.

+1

Lightening rod, or Cherrywood rod. Both good bang for the buck.

I would get a Shimano Convergence. With a lifetime warranty it is a solid choice. I think they are about $39-$49. They are also coming out with a new line that I think was meant to stack up against the ugly stick type rods but I'd still get the covergence. However, for $10 more, you'd be in the Clarus line, which is a better rod.

A ugly stick question.

I've never fished with one, but like just about everyone I've played around with them at Dicks and Sports Authority. They have little to no backbone as you can bend them easily into a "U". They won't break for sure, but how do you set the hook without a monster hookset? Seems to me that with almost no backbone, you've made your life that much harder.

In case you'd be interrested, Bass Pro's add that came out in todays paper shows the Bionic Blade, which normally sells for $79.99 is now on sale for $49.94

academy sells a castaway rod for like $37.99, and it is a great feeling rod. it's very light and the mh has plenty of backbone. if you live near an academy you might check them out. if not then i would probably go with a berkley lightning rod myself.

I agree with you as they have almost no backbone throughout the whole rod. The only one I have owned was a 5'6" Light Action which i used to use for bluegill fishing on the ponds. It was a blast fighting them on this rod, but I would never use one for bass fishing.

Wow I have several Lightenings and maybe a couple of the Cherry's. I am seriously ham handed and the grandkids are worse and they have held up well, but depending on what you intend to d with it I would wait for the BPS Crankin Stick to go on sale and grab one. Love those rods.

+1 I bought one about 5 years ago and it is a slinger. I wouldn't use it for a flipping' stick, but it is an all around good rod. I have had some of my Castaways over 10 years, but they were a little more expensive and higher end. But I bought it for the name and reliability and I have not been disappointed.
