IF i am in lets say 8 feet of water I throw it and let it sink to about a 5 count,

then reel it about 10 feet and stop, let it sink for a 2 count, then reel again every 5-10 feet stop for another 2 count.
Many times if you are fishing over a weedbed this technique will trigger a strike on the fall or the start up again, verses just reeling it continuously

I just vary the retrieve and let the fish tell me what they want.

Most of my fall Trap fishing is done in the backs of coves and creeks in pretty shallow water, sometimes only a foot, so I do not let it sink very much. As for retrieve, I'm usually fishing fast with a pause here and there. I caught a nice limit in our club classic in October 2003 doing this and had the only 5 fish limit of the day.

One new bait I have come across that I am looking forward to using in shallow, fall waters is the Lucky Craft LV0. It's a lipless bait that runs about 1' under the surface, yet still hase plenty of weight to cast. I like it much better than the Floating Traps I used to have.

I usually beef up the line as well, usually 15lb. test as I will be fishing shallow and around cover.
