Live Well
My next project for the canoe is to add a live well. Got it all figured out but just don't know what size. Was thinking 18 gallons. What is y'alls thought and size of yours?
Chris P.S I would like to down size that if possible since 18 gallons of water weighs 135lbs. Don't want to have an accident in a canoe. |

chris,
I'd build one or buy one that is 24 inches long, 12 inches wide and about 12-20 inches deep |

mine is 12 gallon in the stratos. do a cooler live well like dam said.. a 24/36 quart cooler would be ideal put your bilge inside run the hose to a a chunk of pvc buy and end cap drill holes in the pvc pipe. this is used as an aerator.. fill with a bucket..

Zook so you are saying if I just stick a bilge pump in my well the recirculating water will allow the fish to live?
My plan was to have one tube bring water in from the lake and another gravity feed bring the overflow overboard? |

You don't need to do that, unless you want to. The key to keeping fish alive in the well is circulation, and temperature. In the summertime, bringing new, hot water in, without adequate circulation or amount of water, will choke them.
Freeze some 2 liter coke bottles, and add one at 9AM, and one at 11:30AM, this will cool the water. Keeping the aerator on will provide oxygen, but don't leave it on all the time, or you'll get foam, and all of the oxygen will be in the foam, not in the water. Products like Please Release Me work wonders, the fish stay lively for a long time. |

Thanks guys for the info. It will now make my plan sooo much easier to do. Gonna do it today and hopefully try it out on Sat/Sun. And 12 gallons only weighs 90lbs. That will hopefully put my bow down some when I'm in it alone.
But with all this being said I have one more question. Will my 30lb. trolling motor be adequate with all of this weight? and if so how long can I depend on it on only one battery. Thanks y'all Chris |

Here and here are a few articles I found about trolling motors.
Basically, they re designed to run at one speed, regardless of weight, because they run at a set RPM, weight just makes it take longer to achieve this speed. The battery lasts based on the current draw of the motor, with a set RPM, it's going to draw the same no matter the weight. |

need to mount the pvc above the water do it how ever ya want i like screws..
the pumped water needs to spray -catch air- before it returns to the main water.. this put O2 into the water allowing for the fish to breath.. zooker

I would also mount the pump to the bottom. But that should work just fine. You should get some "Rejuvenade/Please Release Me" to keep the fish alive longer. I'm assuming this is for keeping fish, or are you planning on using this for a tourney? Ice bottles also work well to keep the alive longer as already suggested. Even when keeping fish to eat(I had a redfish today), I apply these rules to keep it alive as long as possible. Then straight into the cooler for the ride home. I also use this same method for live bait. Ice and rejuvenade keep the bait lively for the fishing.
