First for me

I was trying a wacky rig in my dad's pond yesterday and was using a red #1 Owner Mosquito hook. Well on my 3rd cast I threw the worm off the hook and backlashed my reel (was throwing it on a baitcaster). As I was pcking the backlash out I felt a tap. Picked up the hook then flipped it back out. Well about a 14" bass swam up to the hook and ate it. It's the first time I've ever caught a bass on a bare hook! That was pretty cool!

I proceeded to catch 3 more on the wacky rigged worm including one that was close to 4 lbs. I'm planning to use this rig in my next tournament this Saturday.

Awesome. You'll find the wacky rig to be pretty awesome and effective. I love wacky rigging because the bait does all the work so I can't mess up with it. What bait were you using?

Just goes to show you...bass, especially young ones, have an uber-aggressive, eat first, ask questions later attitude.

I like throwing a 3/0 gamakatsu straight shanked worm hook and trick worms when I wacky rig. I also put a swivel 3 to 6 inches above the hook.

hey man, that's awesome! the wacky rig has being doing good for me this year.

I've never used the mosquito hooks. I use a gammy octopus hook. since it's close to a circle hook, I rarely hook them deep, and almost always hook right in the side of the mouth.

That Mosquito hook was in the side of the mouth for the 3 smaller fish. In the tongue of the bigger fish. It's similar to a circle hook. I need to practice it more. I'm still playing with this "sissy" fishing style!

How do you like wacky rigging with the octopus hooks??? I caught my first wacky fish on that hook. Then I got finesse wide gap. So should I switch?

The only time I've ever caught fish on a bare hook was in one that was waaaaaay over populated with little bass <-----------------------------------------------< about that long (actual size).
They were probably starving to death and hit anything that moved. Hook, small twigs, pieces of tree leaves...

Gotta love the wacky rig... I always toss that, regardless of situation. in fact, i dont think i even know when the "right" time is to be throwing a wacky rig. oh wait yes i do... ANYTIME!

Probably my favorite presentation. I use a buncha bearpaw hippie sticks (4 inch senko type things... i just get em in a cool color from a bait i once had, cept scented and saltless). Mac2 had a thread a while ago suggesting zoom speedworms with the tail cut off (worms like a charm). I used an offset red 2 hook for a while, caught like crazy, but for some reason today I decided to go buy some gammy 3 octopus hooks for my tourney on saturday.
Love wacky rigging just because you can never go wrong, really... cast it out, hang out for a bit, twitch it back
setting the hook is surefire, almost even unnessecary

a while ago, i had casted a line out into the lake and something tangled in my line. with the bait still out there, i pulled apart the tangle, and started reeling in. once the slack was all gone, lo and behold i had something tugging on the other side...
really does go to show how feisty those young fish are. I usually catch fish about a pound with this rig, but its still tons of fun
