My wife is at home alone a lot when I travel so I got her a Mossberg 12 gauge with a shorter barrel than my 870. I bought some "managed recoil" shells for it which were expensive but seem to help. There's no way she could hit anything with a pistol so she's been instructed to stay in our upstairs bedroom, call 911, and point the shotgun down the stairs. That narrow space and angle will help her hit the target and not launch 00 buckshot into our neighbors' houses.
