Default Flooded river

So we get 5-7" of rain in two days and the rivers come up over their banks. The club decide to postpone the mid-week tournament???? Nope!!! It's still on. 4 boats show up for the 6ish launch time and we see the rock jetties at the ramp are almost submerged. We've got 3 more hours of incoming tide and the water looks like chocolate milk or Capt Mike's coffee (two creams). A quick run up river into a MD feeder creek becomes a slalom run dodging floating limbs. We get to the creek and it's up 3'+ but my partner hits a 14" chunk in shallow water so we know they're hungry. Off to another area that has cleaner water.
Another slalom run and we're at a small feeder creek on the VA side. Beautiful water color. You wouldn't know that we had so much rain if it wasn't 3' over high tide. This gives us a chance to fish areas that normally may have 6" of water or so. We both hook up with 14" fish so things are looking up. We just need to wait for outgoing tide to group the fish up. My partner had never fished the area and didn't know the potential so he made an executive decision and decided to run to a small feeder creek that he had done well in a few weeks before. Only issue was he didn't know the water quality. We ran into the area and muddy water water was pouring out of the main area.....not good. We decided to run in and get a closer look. Much cleaner water but not as good as the area we had left. We start fishing some submerged pads with no luck. Rattle traps and chatterbaits not getting hit. We work our way back a little and I change up baits going with a 3/8th oz spinnerbait with a single #5 willow blade. Why? Don't know.....but it looked good. So I start slinging it and slow rolling it back to the boat. A 13-14" bass loads up and I swing it into the boat. It's short and I've got to toss it back. Good fish though. We move on to another small pocket and the blade bumps a pad and the rod loads up again. Sweet!! This one measures in just over 15" and my first keeper of the year goes into the livewell!!! I might be on to something with the blade. We continue working the creek but no more fish. The tide is moving out but with so much water we still don't see the tops of the pads yet.
Another executive decision is made and we run back across the river to the MD side and another creek. Now we're fishing a flat with grass. We drift along with the outgoing current and breeze across the flat. I'm tossing multiple baits from traps to blades to lizards and flukes with no luck. Nothing biting. Time to move again cuz it's getting late in the day. Off to another creek is the boat owners suggestion. I ask him if before we leave can we hit one section of a shoreline close by to see if the bass had pulled up into a spawning area. I tell him one pass is all it'll take and we'll know if they're there or not. Sure he says. Why not?
We make the quick run and start fishing. He's tossing a trap and I have the blade working. As we work along there's a small 30-40 yard section of new reeds emerging from the water. In that there's a smaller area that has a bunch of green vegetation. My partner hits a small chunk with the trap and gets tangled in the net. I jump up front to control the boat and make a cast. Bingo! I've got a 3lb keeper in the boat. We continue to work down the section catching one more short chunk each. Yep they're there!!!! We turn around and work back. I'm on the back of the boat and my partner has switched over to a War Eagle blade. He casts and his rod loads up. Get the net!!! He pulls up a 5.86lb pig and I scoop it into the net.......Yep they're there alright. We work back and forth across this area multiple times catch a bunch of short chunky bass but no other keepers come into the boat. We're out of time and head back to the ramp.
We pull up to the rocks at the ramp with 5 mins left before weigh in. My partner hops up and begins casting a shallow running square lip. Sure enough the rods bends and I scoop up a nice 3.5lb chunk. Not bad for a couple casts!!!

Clean flooded area

I took 3rd with two fish that weighed 5.5lbs or so. John, in the bottom pic, took 1st with three fish that weighed just a little over 11lbs. Our best 5 fish would have weighed 16lbs which is what took 7th place in the BFL on the river over the weekend. So we definitely found good fish in tough conditions. Too bad we didn't find more keepers but it was still a surprisingly nice day on the river.

Heading out to the radiated mudhole on Weds and back on the river this weekend. Should have plenty to post and talk about......
