Identifying a fish catching crankbait
Even though you may have several of the same crankbait in your box, not all of then are fish catchers. Why? Who knows-could be any number of reasons. Anyway, here is a trick I started doing to keep track of the fish catchers. I keep a Sharpie in the boat, and when I catch a fish on one for the first time I put a small dot on it, usually at the base of the bill. Then I know at a glance if a bait is a fish catcher. Takes some of the guesswork out of it. .

It's basically marking a lure that caught a fish? Couldn't you just remember the lure you used? Then again... I only have a few lures... Anyways, how do you know some interference came within the lure, and the bite of the fish was coincidental? That's a small situation, but it still could play a big factor. I would keep a pencil and a piece of paper in my tackle box (I actually do this) and write the lure, the fish caught, the type of day. Basically a log book.

I agree. If I find a certain bait that catches a few on a trip it gets a sharpie dot on the bill. If it does it again on a different day, it gets put in the Tournament box. Cranks all are different, and certain baits are catchers and others are the one's you give to your riders.

Keeping a logbook is something I'd recommend every angler do. It can really pay off.

I knew that sentence would throw many people off. Ah well, I was too lazy to fix it, so what I meant was, what if, you may have accidentally put your lure into some salt solution or bass solution without you knowing? You could easily probably find out, but that's what I mean, small factors.

Speaking of logs...
Captain's Log. Stardate 415.980... We are boldly fishing where no man has fished before. "Spock!" "Yes, Captain Smirk?" "Please hand me that bag of Klingon Kraws, in Borg Brown/Pepper." "Here, Sir." "Thank you, Spock. Scotty!" "Aye, Captain." "Set Trolldrive speed to mini-warp 3!" "Aye Aye, Captain." "Doctor McCoy!" "Yes?" "Why aren't you casting?" "Dammit, Jim, I'm a doctor, not a fisherman!" "Captain! Alert!" "What is it, Lt. Uhura?" "There's a large alien object looming dead ahead."| "Let me have a look....Great Jumping Jupiter Girls Gone Wild! What is that thing?'" "Keptin!" "What is it, Ensign Chekhov?" "Sir, according to the Space Federation Species Identification Manual, it's a rare specimen of Zookerus Forkliftus!" "Prepare to fire Photon Torpedos!" Continued after a word from our sponsors. FR |

And the lesson here is that if you have your lures or Zookerus Forkliftus marked properly you will know which is which.....

It's possible, and some folks do put scent on fast moving baits like cranks or spinnerbaits. Keep in mind, though, that cranks are reaction baits moving fast so I don't think scent is all that important with this type of bait. If you think it will help by all means add scent.

You know its funny, but I agree some crankbaits just seem to have that knack while others don't. I landed a few on one yesterday just dinking around, so right now I have maybe just 4 or 5 different cranks that I have confidence in.

Then I'll give credit where credit is due-that's probably where I got the idea. Thanks, Bassnman!

I saw this tip from a TV show with KVD a long time ago, I did it for a while, now I just look at the back of the lure and pick the one with the most teeth marks on it
Seriously I even have some "good" baits that I only use when money is on the line, I started doing this after one of my "good" Norman Baby N's got the bill worn down from hitting rocks and quit running at all. There is just something about some cranks that makes them get bit, I used to have 7 of that particular color little N, and only 1 was great, and 1 other one caught fish decently, but the other 5 would rarely catch a fish. One thing that I really pay attention to with the "good" cranks is that they seem to be the ones that get bit when you are not contacting cover, such as on the descent or when the bait starts to come up from the bottom towards the boat.

Had a favorite crank that I used in tournaments. It was a green colored bomber Fat A. I threw it in the woods and never saw it again. Should have been visible since the bait matched the color of the trees, leaves !!
I have about 5-6 others that aren't nearly as good so you all are correct about some baits being better than others (same size, shape, color etc..) Rebbasser, no problem man, needs to be repeated for those that aren't aware. For those who have some cranks that don't work, just take some sand paper and touch the bait a little. Give it to people (friends, or not so good of friends !)for Christmas as a "special" gift. Zook, see ya @ Christmas !

Some baits just seem to be balanced better, if that makes any sense. I'm sure in mass production the tiniest discrepencies get overlooked, i.e. hook placement less than a millimeter off, even minute changes in the location of paints on the bait. These rediculously small factors can have a noticeable effect on the bait presentation. Who knows, it could be the ones that come out just perfect that are catching the fish, or that one that the machine screwed the hook holding eye a little to the left that fish cant resist.

Isn't it easier to just to look at the bait and see if the tail end is chewed up, the paint on the sides chipped, and the lip is scratched up. Usually this tells me if it catches fish or not.
Got out on the river this weekend and threw a brand new "Big Daddy" crankbait. And the bass wacked it all weekend long. It now has teeth marks around the tail. I know it catches fish. All done, no markers needed, no piece of paper to tell me. |

Boy it hurts to lose one of those crankbaits. I lost one last year. I used it to place in a Top 150 (co-angler side) back in the day when they gave out plaques to the top 40. It was a sweet Deep Wee R in firetiger (which they don't make anymore). The tail end was chewed up. The front had dings and dents and the lip felt as if someone took 40 grit to it.
