Default I should’ve called 911 / search and rescue. Friend overboard!

Well, I did it. Dumped one of my favorite rigs right over the pier rail and into the lake. Gotta go and try and retrieve it today. I think it’s about 8-10 feet of water where it went in. My plan is to take my catfishing rig, 7’ H rod, 30lb braid, put two 3-4oz egg weights on with 2 large treble hooks, one about 3 feet up and the other at the end of the line, and drop and drag with occasionally casting out a few feet in case it drifted a little bit.

Any other suggestions?

First mistake I would say is not doing it immediately. Much better chance than.

And swimming is usually the best way if you are a good swimmer and there is decent visibility. But near a heavily fished (assumed) pier, that's probably not a super great idea. Depends how much current. Good luck though.

Hope you triangulated where you dropped it in your mind. If not, you will learn that skill soon.

goggles or mask would help. Fins too. 8-10' doesn't sound like much but unless you swim often you'll find it a challenge....been there done that. Knocked three $250 rigs out of a friends boat at the ramp. Treble hook found one and I dove for the other two. It took a bunch of attempts to find them.

If you're going to try that rig go with some lighter sinkers or you'll hang up constantly if there is anything down there. An ounce should be more than enough unless there's a current. Personally would have gone swimming for one of my favorites on the spot but certain factors could effect that also if there's a lot of waves, lots of brush, or if you're not a strong swimmer.

I wish you the best of luck. That happened to me once and my brother last year. Both rigs are still at the bottom of the lake. I now keep a home made rig in the boat to try snagging lost overboard gear. It's a steel ring with 3 trebles attached and attached to a small rope.

Hope you get it back. So far I am 2 for 2. Lost 2 and got them back. Both times shallow stained water.

I have fished out many within minutes of their dive into the drink. Never gone back a day later.

I lost one ultra light rig overboard a few years ago. I marked the spot on the GPS and went back a week later with a rig that I made by buying one of those steel stringers with the big hooks. I bent all the hooks open wide and slipped a sinker (3/8?) on each hook. I tied it up to 50# braid on a heavy rod and dragged it around. After about 30 minutes I found it! Too bad that trick didn't work with my wedding ring that went in about 10' of water with weeds up to 6-8'.

I lost my rig in a river in dark 8 foot of water. I tied on a treble hook with sinker and on the 4th cast I hooked the rig and brought it into the boat. I was a happy fisherman. Good luck to you.
