im completely new to the jerkbait technique.. what is everyones favorite bait and best advice they can give me on the subject!? trying to get a few ideas before i purchase a couple!! thanks

Buy a few lucky craft pointers in varying sizes. Throw the lure out and jerk it back with a *twitch twitch.....pause....twitch* retrieve. The bites usually come on the pause. Vary the length of your retrieve until you find what cadence they want.

Jerkbaits are a ton of fun to fish as long as you have strong wrists. I point the rod tip at about 4 O'Clock and twitch it downwards on a slightly slack line. Don't twitch it too hard or it won't look natural.

Lucky Craft pointer 100, 100DD and 78. Get a couple of each in a few different colors and you'll be set... At $15 a pop it hurts for a minute or two.

As for working it, the "twich, twich, pause" is the best. Sometimes the pause can be for 30 seconds plus. Have fun with it and figure out what the fish want.

I see nobody has brought up the soft bodied jerk bait like the fluke , fish it the way described above or also a rattle n rouge is another good one .

The floating jerkbaits are some to consider too. The Smithwick rogues are great lures during post spawn. I like to fish it around any shallow cover I can find and just twitch it on top usually 2 twitches and pause but mix it up til you find a cadence they like.

rattlin rogues are my favorite all you have to do is vary your retrieve until you find what works.

I like the clown and silver/black color rogue right now because the white perch and bluegill are getting ready to spawn. We like to get away from the beds and cast into them and pull them back out of the spawning ground where the bass will sometimes move up and wait for an easy meal. I am also a huge fam of the Bass Assassin soft jerkbait in blue/green, watermelon, red shad, and silver/black. The BA seems to lift out of the water a little better than the flukes for me. I like to hook the soft jerkbaits with the hook eye as deep in the bait as you can get before coming out of the hook pocket. I also do this with a struaght shank, barbed hook. It seems to throw the balance back a little further and the jerkbait will jump out of the water during the twitch. Just my .02 though, they don't pay me for my abilities.

the best bait for your money is the strike king KVD series wild shiner. try the sexy shad, clown or blue gizzard shad.they're just as good as the lucky craft if not better and they are only $5-$6 dollars, so you could get more for your money.as for technique after it hits the water, give it a couple of quick jerks to get it to it running depth, then personally i use a constant motion of one twitch about every two seconds.

I use the Smithwick as well. It is a lure that you need to play with to find your rythym. But do get some in the basic colors and have it tied on just to try it.

PS over rocks it works best. Hit the rocks and pause.

Wasn't on the water long enough to throw for hours. Wind picked up and it got choppy and cold

AC Shiner 375. Its a light balsa lure with high buoyancy that you jerk hard and quick. Its a very good reaction bait.

I really like the RattlinRouges, especially the floating versions. In fact, the bass in this picture was taken on a Rouge worked with the twitch twitch pause technique that MIbasser above mentioned. Recently I stared using the Rapala A Rap in a size 10 for when I want a suspending version and really liked how it performed. When using the suspending version, I usually start out by casting it out and reeling it down to the desired depth. Then I pause it and let it sit for a few seconds. The my retrieve starts with it being a slow to moderately fast tug or pull of the rod. Then let it sit a few seconds and repeat. If that fails to catch any bass after a while, I'll start changing retrieves untill I find what they want. One retieve that works well from time to time for me is to cast out and reel it down to the desired depth. Pause, and then rip the lure forward a couple feet and pause. That often times will get you a jarring strike.

Smithwick Rouges silver/black/orange.....nice lure.....Lucky crafts too...a little pricey but a good lure....get it to desired depth..vary retreive twitch twitch pause...twitch pause twitch....etc...vary the time of your pauses....sooner or later you'll get a hit.....usually good bait for pre spawn....fairly cold to cool water.....

me and rouges hate one other.. i have differant uses for pointers than jerk baits.. me i use x rap's they will do some thing either the lc or rouges will do and that is. they can be worked extremely fast..my favorite is a "yank, yank, haul, yank, haul,yank, haul, haul yank" no pause. one of the few things i like to use a 7.1 lefty reel on..

All my Jerkbaiting is done with Rapala X-Raps. #8 and up on a baitcaster, and #6 on a spinning setup. Color wise, it's a Perch color for LM, while Smallies seem to prefer Clown but will take a Perch color too.

For the retrieve, a lot depends on water temps. When the water is in the low to mid 40s I've found that a slow pull of the rod, then a real long pause is most effective. Once the water temps reach near 50, the traditional jerk, jerk, pause kicks in. Still the length of the pause is critical as the vast majority of hits come right after the pause.
I also do well with a Super Fluke. I use them over old weed beds in the spring and new weed beds during the summer season. I don't use a jerk retrieve with them, but rather I reel them in slowly, then a pause. I find that with a rod jerk, the Fluke just moves way too much to be realistic in any sense of the word.

You got the Idaho smallmouth cadence figured zooker! I love the x-raps, but if i have the money I will get a pointer 100, they are an awesome suspending jerkbait. As for soft jerks, I always go with a super-fluke, usually in pearl.
