Default Monkey Fly Attack

It started with a simple eye wear prescription update (three years overdue...) and the fact that there hasn't been enough ice to fish. Cabin fever made me grab my son's fly tying kit to make some bass flies and $300 later I'm up to my eyeballs in deer hair, chenille, brass eyes, feathers, and you name it. In the last week, I've tied up a few BLTs (Brown Little Turds - a creation of a friend of mine and a real smallmouth producing fly here in the Finger Lakes), Clousers, Double Bunny Strip flies, and more.

I'm just hoping I get more proficient at fly casting this year and that these suckers will catch some bass! Heck, my son and I even put together a fly tying bench using an old stainless steel medical roll cart...

I'm getting dangerously close to trying that myself. I have some of the gear and have been tying trout jigs in preparation for a trip to the White River in Arkansas next month but I haven't taken the plunge into full blown fly tying. It looks fun but I don't know if I can afford another hobby!

Thanks! I don't think fly fishing is necessarily a better technique, it's just that I've never really gotten good at fly fishing. I've decided that this is the year I'm going to concentrate on fly fishing. I will mostly be going after smallies in clear water lakes and rivers.. It's kind of fun, but it will be challenging for me to stick with it. We'll see how it goes...

Why don't you break out those fly rods and give me some pointers?

I hear you. I thought I'd save some money by tying up my own flies... Ha! Good luck on your trip next month!
