Default Auto Problems (HELP)

I was on my way home from Medina lake last weekend when I was approaching a hill I stepped on the gas to get momentum to for the hill. But as soon as I stepped on the gas pedal the engine bogged down and died. I pulled onto the side of the road. I tried to start it again, it would start then die. About an hour later after watching all the cars go by I was going to start walking. I decided to give it one last shot. It started but idled rough, I put it in drive climbed the hill and made it home. It seems to run fine now but it hesitates when I first step on the gas. O by the way it’s a 2001 Toy 4runner. Would anyone know what the problem could be????????

Check around your intake hoses for leaks. Listen really close for a hissing noise, that is usually a dead give away. My truck did this a couple of mnths ago and after paying over 100 bucks for parts that I thought would fix it, the problem was the PCV hose had a crack in it and was allowing too much fresh air into the intake. The replacement cost me 95 cents. I was kicking myself the entire way home. Runs great now.

When was the last time you changed the fuel filter or gave it a tune up? I had a car one time that acted up really bad because the fuel filter was clogged. It would run and then cut off, I let it sit for a bit and it would crank right up.

PCV valve, clogged fuel filter. Could even be a tranny problem. The first two should probably be checked first. Also sounds like whatever caused it has fouled the plugs.

yeah,what bassbooger said. also,did you check the fuel pump? the fuel pressure could have dropped and then built back up and the truck started again.

I just did the filter about 10,000 miles ago. But I'm going to give in and take it to a dealer. I can't afford the chance of this happening again. I don't want to be broke down and have to leave my bass rig on the side of the road......

Master tech over here says it might be the Mass airflow sensor, maybe even the throttle body. Souns like a Mass to me as well. Hope they dont hurt you too bad.

Just take it to AutoZone or some local parts place, that thing has OBDII and they will tell you what codes it is throwning. That will give you someplace to start anyway.
Without any codes it does sound like a fuel filter (most of my cars are preOBD). You could have gotten some bad fuel even. Mass Air Flow is common on some VWs, don't know about Toyotas. That should throw codes though. I just ordered one of these yesterday, should be handy: http://www.scangauge.com/ mainly for the boost and fuel economy for me.

well I got it back tonight, I was told I cracked a valve cover and oil was getting into the coils and spark plugs. $1200.00 later it feels like it's running better. I'll find out on this weeks pull to the lake

I would tell them that I want to see the cracked valve cover so I knew for sure they weren't telling a big fat lie. That just doesn't seem correct, unless you had oil all over the inside of your engine compartment.

That is just my thoughts though.

Oxygen sensor makes a vehicle do this as well if it has one.

A faulty vacuume line would also make the engine run rough.

late model engines are all hemisperical heads like the old mopars and the sparkplug tube seals are prone to leaking. Not sure if they are replacable on a Toyota but some of the Nissans use a flush mount valve cover with an integrated seal. Those valve covers go upwards of 300 a piece so in all reality 300 per side is 600 and 5-6 hours of labor should be around 600 as well depending on what the labor rate is.

I wasn't to happy with the price and I did want to see all the old parts. I was shown the oil on the out side of engine and on the back side. But you also have to look this is dealer prices too.
