some of the locals.....
Some of the locals find minnows in streams, go quietly above the minnows maybe 15 yards and kick dirt into the water. When the muddy cloud decends down and over the minnows, they seine them. In the murkyness, the minnows don't know which way to turn for escape.
Some of the locals, in summer, tie an old wool blanket over the front of their 4 wheelers and run them through tall grasses and weeds. Grasshoppers stick to the blanket and are readily picked off. A drop of super glue attaches them to the hook. If you wish, you can snell some smaller hooks and glue them to the hoppers ahead of time.....use a duo lock snap for quick changes. Some grow their own corn worms for bluegill and trout bait. When late spring has arrived and the weather has warmed, they fill a bucket half full of cracked corn....they then dampen the corn and cover with a lid containing small holes. After a bit, they pick out the white maggot like larva and put them in small containers of pine sawdust, also having small airholes in the lids. The refrigerator stores them in a suspended state and will keep them good for a long time. If you leave the worms in the bucket too long, they change into black flying insects....not good for much. I am grateful to have learned the above from Gene at the sawmill and Catfish at the bait shop. |
