rotten wood
Can anyone tell me how to tell if the wood of my transom is rotting. Any help on how to asses the damage to the structural integrity of my boat is greatly appreciated. looked for hours on the web but found very little. Thanks all. I've let my boat set out for the last three years uncovered, and want to redo everything but the fiberglass stuff. But i don't want to get ripped off with having uneccesary repairs. Thanks again for any help.

Re: rotten wood
The best way I know is to tilt the motor up and grab the lower unit, lift it up and down [don't be shy] and watch the transom. If it has flex it probably needs attention.
A little flex is ok but if it moves alot and creaks and groans it needs work. Other than that if you can get to the wood just poke at it with a pocket knife,it will sink right in if it's rotten. |
