I have some minor skeg damage and was wondering if the skeg protectors are worth putting on to fix it or if I should just go get a piece welded back on the skeg?

I have heard that by using these instead of sacrificing your skeg you will now sacrifice your whole lower unit, much costlier IMO.

I usually just use a course flat file and fix my own "minor" scrapes, luckily, I haven't experienced any real serious damage to mine. KNOCKS ON WOODS BET |

I saw a product on tv the other day that is a skeg replacement. You epoxy it over your existing damaged skeg and it is suppose to do well.

i tore my skeg off in bass tournament when i hit a roadbed..i had guy weld new one on ,90 dollars for parts and labor.. i watch that roadbed now..i fished the potomac river in tournament and tore up 2 propellers.. that river is nasty to fiberglass boats..also use fiber propellers so you dont damage your motor. |

Those stainless skeg protectors are prety to look at ............and it ends there. HIT SOMETHING WITH ONE OF THOSE YOU THEN HAVE TO 90% of the time your replacing a lower. Get the skeg repaired by a professional and be done with it. Also those stainless protectors have more than once caused handling issues that cant be resolved unless removed.

i also agree with fastlaser on skeg..i fished bass tournament in the potomac river..guys that had stainless propeller tore the h out of their gears hitting things in river.. i used the fiber propellers which tear up edge if you hit anything..i carry a file and filed the edges at nearest boat dock which got me thru the day.. potomac is nasty river for hittinging things.. |
