Setting the hook
When setting the hook do you wait a second after the fish has bitten it or right when you feel the twitch do you jerk it back

Re: Setting the hook
Depends on what I'm using. With a jig or soft plastic I reel down when I feel the hit and set the hook hard. with a spinnerbait or crankbait I just sweep the rod away from the fish. With a topwater I wait until I feel the fish and then just raise the rod tip.

Re: Setting the hook
I don't think you can set the hook on a fish too fast. Sure everyone can tell you about the time the fish picke the worm up by the tail and didn't have the hook in his mouth good. It happens.
Most of the time though you're going to feel three thumps on a worm or a jig. The first one is when the fish picks the bait up, the second is when he spits it out, and the third one is when you hit your forhead and say "I missed ANOTHER one". A topwater strike is the only one I think you can be too fast on. A good trick to help you slow down, is don't look right at the bait. Watch it out of the corner of your eye. Wait until you hear the sound of the strike, or as Red said you actually feel the fish. Then nail him. |

Re: Setting the hook
With soft plastics, I rarely feel anything, as almost all my strikes are detected by seeing the line moving off. When I see it moving, I set the hook. I read some advice that says that by the time you see your line move or feel anything, the bass has already engulfed it, so set hook as soon as you realize you have a strike, and I've found that to hold true.

Re: Setting the hook
Ever snag a branch that has a little give to it? It "pulls" back just like a fish does. Set the hook on one of those a time or two myself ;D

Re: Setting the hook
Or how about that piece of line that the jig and pig picks up that's wedged in some rocks. The hook on the jig slides up and down on the line, been there, done that.

Re: Setting the hook
Woo Daves always says to figure out what it feels like when you don't have a strike, and set the hook on anything else. More good advice.
When I was teaching my wife to Slider Worm fish, I told her "If it feels alive, set the hook". It worked for her. |

Re: Setting the hook
Let's face it , Rip the little fellers lips off!
When you wait too long you run into a chance of him swallowing the hook and causing more damage to the fish. This sucks when catch and release comes into play. But mostly it's all feel you'll know when to pop that hook it's like a sign from God, your hands will jerk from divine intervention, Well for some of us it is.
