Kiss of Death
So,
I've been waiting out the wind all day, its been 20 mph with gust near 28 mph I keep checking the weather channel as I am painting the living room ceiling (to kill time) finally about 6 tonight it is still blowing 17 mph but thats OK in my book...almost perfect except a puny cold front has hit oHIo. So I get all my gear in the boat, get ready to launch and see a foot of water in the back, I get that out no sweat, make my first cast , tonights lure of choice, the Flat A by bomber, tennesse shad...Throw up to the dam and BOOM I get hit...its a f/n monster bluegill full of egg or sperm, might have been a male, So here I am thinking, man tonights the night, big bass here I come, I plug along and get out another rod that has a chrome and blue rapala and throw that, but by now I am about 100 yards off the dam, and I feel the "tick" swing back and can see I have a nice fish..Finally I am thinking, it looks about 17-18 inches and fiesty as hell. I play it out and get ready to swing it in the boat, and about crap, its a huge crappie (felt like it was on steroids) So I am still pumped thinking bass would hit, I grab another pole with the Spook, its been working for me, had a nice one swirl near the boat, but missed him, then end up with 2 dinks for the rest of the nite, pulled out the trusty Pop R and got one decent one, but not as big as that crappie.....lol So I guess my pt is that whenever I get bit first cast, it usually jinxs the rest of the night... 8) |

Re: Kiss of Death

Re: Kiss of Death
Well, its sunday morning and as soon as the wife brings the Jeep back with groceries I am heading right back to the same spot and figure this out,
As a rule of thumb I'll tie on dif lures on each rod, prob slow way down to a flippin' n pitchin' game , its bluebird skies and NO wind to speak of. They sure didnt want the lizard or worm last night, I threw a craw colored 2 inch grub on 1/16th leadhead but was getting no where with my baitcaster with 17lb test, so today I'll break out the quantum spinning outfit and grub it lol Its still nice to get out an see all the new geese and duck families that are frequenting the banks, I keep thinking when the take off in the water they do sound like a buzz bait , esp the babies lol |

Re: Kiss of Death
I normally loose the first bass of the day. I'm trying to figure out a way to get that first bass in the boat, but so far no good. I even prepare myself for that first strike. No good, he still gets off. Maybe I need some help from a good head shrinker. Any comments of advise are greatly appreciated. That is with the exception of zooker, I don't need it or want to hear it ! Now if bassenforcer has some advise, I still don't want to hear it I've already heard it all from him !

Re: Kiss of Death
ohhh boy where to start ?? ok i agree your head is way to bloated. i know of some pygmy canibales that may help with the head shrinking .i think you might recheck your drag.. but that is just me.

Re: Kiss of Death
Zook,
When you say "thats just me " well it is just you ! Seriously, I loose fish on spinnerbaits, worms and crankbaits. Loose drag, tight drag it doesn't seem to matter. I feel as though my drag is set just right for the baits that I'm throwing but the fish somehow get off. Whether it's trying to throw the hook or down deep. Granted, the rest of the bass get in the boat, but the first one is always a problem. |

Re: Kiss of Death
Check your rod tip, you may have too much flexiblity in it, many are stout up to the last 18 inches, try flexing some dif brands some time and you'll note the dif. I am talking about ..try all med heavy rods to compare,
Chances are you are perhaps using a med action now? if thats not the case, try a harder hookset and make sure the hook is razer sharp. Try to raise the rod straightup hard, many times after we figure out fishing our hookset goes soft lol : |
