Spooling braid
I just got a spinning rod, PowerPro, Stren Flourocarbon line... and i already have Stren 10lb test line. Don't u tie on a little bit of reg. mono. first then tie it to the braid then obviously use a leader @ the last few ft?....what knots should i use?

Re: Spooling braid
huh?? on a spinning rod no on a baitcaster yes -spinning rods don't backlash- i would tie it straight to the reel and wind it on real tight.-braid and/or floro. but reach down and chunk the stren 10 pound straight in the trash.imo stren mono is junk...

Re: Spooling braid
actually stren is really good. It's the Trilene that i would whipe my @$$ w/....it probably wouldn't do a good job and would hurt but my point is i hate Trilene.

And I don't use any mono EXCEPT Trilene. Just goes to show you there isn't one best line-everyone has their favorite. |

Re: Spooling braid
I like both Stren and Trilene. Last year I started using Fireline for the first time, which is a fused line, not braided. But my procedure has been the same whether I used mono or Fireline. I use cheap mono as backing, then spool on about 50-60 yards of the line I'm actually fishing with, attaching the two lines with a uni-to-uni knot.

i also use stren and trilene, and i ie both of them very much. but did you say you were using a leader? why? if its braid it is strong enough by its self, no leader needed. i havnt used braid, but i would think you dont need a leader.

bf02, I can't read the original poster's mind, but you might be talking about separate issues. It sounds like you're talking about a metal leader to protect against toothy fish biteoffs, and he might have been talking about a mono or fluoro leader on the theory that it is less visible than the solid braid. |

Re: Spooling braid
i was actually thinkin of a larger lb test like 30lb braid then 60 lb mono, i didnt think about the visibility thing.

Listen to this man. Why waste money on Braid when any cheap mono will work for a backing string. If it already has string on it, use it, just take it down to half of the spool, before starting your braid. Lizards |
