Re: sink holes
Rain water is slightly acidic so when there is a small crack in the ground the rain water will seep in the crack and the acid will slowly eat away at the rock underneath. Over time it will dissolve a huge portion of rock and then you are left with a hollow hole that will collapse when wieght is put on it. In Tennessee we do not have this problem because we have limestone everywhere. Limestone naturally neutralizes the acid.

Re: sink holes
Actually that is a small part. Usually the heavy rains will seep underground and if there is a weak channel it will continue to wash this one area away, thus causing a hole or crater. Once the hole gains size the ground above it becomes to heavy and falls in. This usually happens after a long dry spell or drought. Also if the underground aquafier(spelling) is depleted this will leave a large undergroung cavern that eventually will fill w/ water or dry out and collapse. 8)
