crankbait question
never really been into using but this year thats what im working on. i try and pick something im not used to fishing and just go out and learn it. my question is, how do you guys keep track of what dept the bait is used for. some of them have it on the bill but some dont. would etching it in the bill throw the action off...

Yammy,
First off, it is good to see anyone from Alabama able to post today. Glad you are alright. While I own a lot of crankbaits, I just recently started throwing them and had to deal with the same thing. depending on the crankbait, etching won't impact the action if you do it on the underside. The reason that I say depending on the crank is that some of them have thinner lips. I have gone a little to crazy with the dremmel and ended up weakening the lip too much. It is frustrating to cast out a bait and reel in only a lip. On the thin lipped baits, I just mark them with a sharpie. One thing to remember is that the depth on the box does not always equal the actual depth. The type and size of line as well as tuning of the bait can change how deep it will actually run. If possible, I suggest finding a spot with known depths (I am forutnate to have a swimming pool) and find the known depth before you mark them.

depth
Yammy a easy way is to take a Sharpie and write the depth on the bottom or underside of the bill near the body. The more you use them or find favorties you'll know, also some have a tight wiggle and some a wide wobble. Keep your cost in check by KISS ( keep it simple stupid ), as for colors shad, crawdad and firetiger will cover most conditions. I hope this helps. bigbasser

I use an ultra fine point sharpie to mark the depths on the bottom of the bill.
I also keep my cranks separated by general depth in my tackle boxes. BB

A little sharpie on the chin of the bait works fine for me!

After you learn how the hydrodynamics of crankbait bills work you tell just by looking at it what its going to do... This site should help http://www.tacklemaking.com/default.php?pageID=98

I don't actually have mine marked as to how deep they run, but I do have them organized in my 3600 boxes acording to their running depth. It's not exact, but close enough. I have storage boxes for shallow/medium/med deep/deep.
