carp
At this one spot I fish for bass, I've noticed a number of huge carp, some probably in the 40lb range. Its finally gotten to me and I can't stand it any more, I've got to catch one. I know nothing about carp fishing except for doughballs and corn on the bottom. Anyone else know of some good baits that I should try or what time of day and what depth should I fishj for them at?

Get you some bread, put it in your hand, lay the hook in the middle, squirt you some Aunt Jemima syrup on the bread and wad it into a dough ball. Coat the outside of the bread with syrup and cast it out. That syrup will draw them in and you will catch one.

Hula be sure to cover the whole hook with your bait so none of the hook can be seen!

I sometimes go out for carp on my ultra light and 4 lb test or my fly-rod but if you want to draw them in ( if you can chum non-game fish in your state ) dump a can of cat food in and they will come around. As for bait cheese can work well some times and a mix of dough and peanut butter can work wondersfor these things. I recomend braided line if they are that big because if they can feel even the slightest bit of line they will spit it out. Another good tip is go weightless. Use slip weights and a swivel if you must but tying a hook right on your mainline without any splitshots or weight works best. On carp make sure you raise your rod too high or they will snap it if they go on a deep run. When I started fishing for carp a while a go I was useing my bass tackle ( nice spinning rod and 8 lb line) I lifted my rod tip too high just as it started a run and my pole snapped in two. If you go out keep a light drag and get yourself an ugly stick is my advise. good luck!

I fished for carp this year for a month before bass season opened. I used to carp fish a lot, but hadn't done so in 10-12 years. I just use corn and fish with the bail open. I've got an egg sinker about 12" up from the hook and a BB shot to keep it from sliding down.
Some people look down on carp, but I think they're loads of fun and are a fine sportfish.

The main problem with them (and the reason that they are looked down on) is because they eat the eggs of bass and other species that are more often targeted. Another reason is that one broke my bass rod heh I still ain't forgiven them for that. My dad also had a piece of advise as well that I forgot to put in my last post. The carp often circle around the bait before takeing it in so get a line that sinks and keep your rod tip low before the hookset so the line stays on the bottom and keep it as still as possible or they wont take it.

hula they love corn kernels just hooks a corn kernel on a hook and wait they will take it. Also they are strong! use a very heavy rod or they will snap it like a tooth pick, and strong line something over 20 pounds! If corn dont work get corn meal and make a douh ball out of it. if none of this on hand doggie kibble works too!

I've heard that I have to cover the entire hook or they won't take it. How should I set the hook then if the entire thing is covered in bread?

dont worry the bread softens up youll get a good hook set bu make sure they take it a bit before you do, carp can be a bit picky.

don't be afraid to really rail on the hook set if you have a strong pole and good line. I almost never hook them anywhere but the mouth and it is really tough so it is unlikely you will pull it out. I catch them on nightcrawlers sometimes when I am going for baitfish but not too often

i caught a 12 lb carp last week using a hook that i completely covered with algae. just cover the hook and slowly drag it along the bottom of the sandbeds. No need for a bobber.

Carp? Carp are trash fish. Man I hate when I hook a carp. Then the worst part: you have to unhook it. I hate even touching the nasty fish.
The best solution:

heres a bait recipe I found
mix 1 cup of flour, 1 cup of yellow cornmeal, and 1 teaspoon of sure in a bowl take a 1 quart container of water and pour just enough of it into the bowl to make a heavy dough roll the dough into balls about 1/2 inch to 1 inch diameter mix the rest of the water with 1 cup of molasses and pour it into a pan put the pan on the stove and bring the molasses and water to a boil when the mixture is boiling, drop in several doughballs, but dont over cook them. Cook them for 2 to 3 minutes. cook the rest of the doughballs a few at a time in the same You can store the cooked doughballs in the leftover water and molasses. Hope this helps some Hula |

If you really hate carp or just want to hook one and nothing else works. try a size 6/0 treble and thick line :/ I don't do it because I prefer the chalange of the hookup rather than the easy way

lol, here in NJ, the Passaic river is freaking loaded with those damn rats. My dad and I just bow fish for them. No need to touch the slimy bastards, and then once we've had enough fun, we give them to our neighbors, who really enjoy eating them. (YUCK!)
