Need Catfishing Advice.
Going tomorrow, to a 5-7 acre pond. Probably, I'm going to use cut Mackerel and dead Cigar Minnows on a circle hook, on the bottom.
The pond has a deep end and a shallow end. The shallow end has an oxygen fountain. Between the shallow and deep ends, there's some underwater brush. The pond, I'm guessing is 10-12 feet deep at deep end and 3-5 feet at shallow end. I've seen some enormous catfish pulled out of there, and the pond record is an 83-pound blue! There are all 3 main types of catfish in the pond (Channel, Blue, & Flathead). Does anyone have any advice to give me as in what depth/place/bait is better to use tomorrow? comments would be appreciated, seaphantom |

Re: Need Catfishing Advice.
first of all i hate a circle hook unless it is on a jug. i prefure a big live bait hook 8-10/0heavy tackle is a must.if you are going with dead bait more and likely you will catch channles or blue cats. as flat heads will not grab dead bait. if you want to get flat heads catch some blue gills for bait.
my casting gear is mostly 8' spinning tackle 20 pound mono a single crappie cork-yeah i know- 2' above a large single bait hook. belive it or not most big cat fish feed at or near the surface day or night no matter. i have caught cat fish on jugs exceeding 70 pounds with less than 6 feet of line in 50-90 feet of water zooker

Just go buy large non-frozen raw shrimp, peel it and put it on a circle hook............oh and hold the rod.If you set it down you'll get your rod dragged in the water like i did...

I had to go after it , it was my first reel.My dad bought it in the late fifties or early sixties. An old Mitchell 300 spinning reel. It was late march and was in up to my waist , let's just say the day ended right then and there.

Re: Need Catfishing Advice.
powerbass- You don't use nightcrawlers for 60-80 pound class catfish.
I have rod holders that stick into the ground. Nearly impossble to lose a rod with those. Well, never did get to go, otherwise this would be a post on what I would've caught. The weather reports said that it will be raining all day. As the day progressed, it ended up not raining at all, and I could've gone fishing. ??? > Going to go fishing for sure, in a week or two.... : Oh well, if you have information to share, please do. thanks, seaphantom |

Fish deep. Cast your line prop your pole and wait.
After an hour or so, if you havent had any luck. Move to a new spot and do the same. Did well in catfish tournaments doing just that. |
