Re: Bleeding Baits good or bad?
I think that the whole bleeding red stuff is a sort of gimmick. I have not heard that they catch more bass. I believe that it is a marketing thing. I fell for it once, I purchased the Hellicoptor lures off of tv once and never caught one thing with them. >

Some folks swear by them, some swear at them. The jury is still out as far as I'm concerned.

Re: Bleeding Baits good or bad?
I think it's also a gimmick. I've caught about the same amount with the regular ole hook and cheaper.

Re: Bleeding Baits good or bad?
I base a lot of my purchases on what the pros' use. And also recommendations of members on this forum. Sometimes I'll try something if the bait monkey see's something steal his eye. He's been wrong alot. I would think they might work better in clear water. But then again they say red is the first color to fade in the water. Which leads me to believe that bass see shades instead of color. This makes me think they are conditioned to these shades and therefore are able to determine what is blood or food.

Re: Bleeding Baits good or bad?
I'm in the process of conducting an experiment. Â*I've put red treble hooks on the front hook of several crankbaits, and have identical baits without a red hook. Â*I'll keep you posted.
Bassboss has had a lot of success doing that, so I'm following his lead. |

Re: Bleeding Baits good or bad?
Had one crankbait w/red hooks in the front and I caught alot of bass while using this particular lure. Now after experimenting, I use red hooks on about all my cranks, (Unless they have red on them from the factory like gills, red under the chin etc..). I've practiced with baits with out red hooks and caught some but not nearly the same size as with the red. I changed over to red hooks and my catch went up on size (on the same bait).
Note: I threw this "modified" bait in the same areas that I did with out the red hooks. |

Re: Bleeding Baits good or bad?
denny brauer swears by them. probably cause he pushes the product. they say that red in the wild indicates weakness the reason behind the logic of the bleeding baits. i never fell much for the reasoning, but on the other hand my dad swears that his red and black spinner bait is the reason for his success, matter of opinion, i think.

Re: Bleeding Baits good or bad?
i've done good on bleeding baits and use them some. i always replace the front treble hook on my crankbaits with a red mustad triple grip hook.

Why does everyone change your front hook and not both of them?

Re: Bleeding Baits good or bad?
i do it because then they go for the front of the bait and it'll get better hook up but if u have the back one he might go for it and miss it more often then on the front one.

Re: Bleeding Baits good or bad?
spinnerbait king, why do you want him to go after your hooks? the bass should go after your lure. if the purpose of the hook was to attract the fish, then people would just throw a red hook out. i dont think the hook should even be seen. if they could, clear hooks would probally work really well.

I think they work.....sometimes.....especially on fast-moving baits.

Re: Bleeding Baits good or bad?
the red hooks make it look like a blood stream comin off the crankbait.

Re: Bleeding Baits good or bad?
Quite a bit of the reasons bass bite baits, is usually in the mind of the beholder, pushed by marketing. If for any reason, red hooks stay around for a few years or more, it will be because confidence, in general, has been built up by many anglers actually seeing a difference in catch rates. Large companies will not keep making stuff that doesn't catch on (i.e. 3X and cyberflex baits, Frenzy cranks, the Flying Lure, etc) regardless of who pimps them.
The Senko caught the fishing world by storm and will be here for the next decade, if not longer. It didn't need hype because a good product stays in demand, even at ridiculous prices. If something works consistently, I'll want to stock and restock it. There are few classics sold in their original form (crankbaits excepted) and red hooks may go the way of the tons of junk we've been exposed to or they may become the standard, hook option for all lures. We'll see. SS |

Re: Bleeding Baits good or bad?
If they increase your level of confidence by all means use them, personally I haven´t found any differerence between them and regular baits, the same story applies to red hooks.

Re: Bleeding Baits good or bad?
I've had reasonable success with them. My only complaint is that I find the red to come off very easily, and it isn't long before you have a regular hook.
I wouldn't pay extra for them, but the idea makes sense to me. In nature, red is a color of weakness. How many animals have a blood-colored fur? |
