Baitcaster tips
Well once again I got a tip from Uncle Homer in the Bassmaster Oct 04 issue. Here's the question that was posed and his response.
question: "I'm sold on the smooth casting and maximum strength of braided lines-------- just great! But, when I get a backlash it cuts right down to the spool axle and is impossible to pick out. Got any solution for this problem----- and don't tell me to go back to monofilament." answer: " Here's a cure that will both please and amaze you; it's so simple. Make your longest cast in the backyard, and then peel off 10 more feet. Stick a strip of 1/2-inch plastic tape across the line left on the spool, and rewind line over it. Then, when you get a backlash the braided line can't cut any deeper than the plastic tape, and easily unravels." Now with my SLOW MIND, I thought about this, and realized it could make the baitcaster a happy tool for me if it prevents backlashes of the magnitude I seem to get. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had ever heard of this or even used this trick. It sounds like a winner to me, but I don't know enough about baitcasters yet to say if it would or wouldn't work. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions. Lizards |

I also have heard this tip but I don't use baitcasters. I read it in the nafc magazine.

Re: Baitcaster tips
I've heard the tip, but never tried it. It should work fine, the only thing that could go wrong is if a fish peels off line back to the tape (thats unlikely, but if it happens then thats a fish you might like to have).

Just wondering how or why that would be a problem? It's talking about braid, so it shouldn't break, and if it's pulling off line then it should be able to pull off the tape? Lizards |

Re: Baitcaster tips
i don't use the tape trick.when i get a backlash i start reeling with my fingernail pressed against the spool.if you do this before you go picking at it,it will usually come right out.even with the braided lines, and they seem to come out better than mono.

Re: Baitcaster tips
I guess you are right lizards, in theory the tape should just be pulled off if you are using any braid that is worth its salt....but also in theory you want to minimize any binding whatsoever on the drag.

Re: Baitcaster tips
LIZARDS,
Â* Â* Go back and read what you wrote: "Cast your longest cast, then peel off TEN MORE YARDS of line and wrap a piece of tape on the spool." Â*Ten yards, thats thirty feet. Do you not think you could stop a bass' run before he peeled off thirty feet of line? Â* Â* I have not used this method, what I do instead is to put about 50 to 60 yards of mono on the spool and wrap it tightly with a couple layers of electricians tape, then wind on 50 yards of braid. That way, the braid can not cut down to the spool, only down to the mono. This also has a tendency to lessen the back lashes I get. I have yet to have a bass take off 50 yards of line. Generally, I have her headed towards the boat before she peels off 5 yards of line. JackL Â* |

Jack, go back and read: I was the one talking about the possibility of a bass taking off that much line.

Re: Baitcaster tips
That deal with the thumb in the line works well in certain conditions.
If you get a b-lash thats thick as what you'd get by actually having "interference"with your backcast, then forget it , too deep. Go ahead with the knife. Maybe you could pull knots out the rest of the afternoon, and kink up your line, hey it's your option. |

Re: Baitcaster tips
personally when i get one of those big backlashes-like bassman states. i normally just reel in the line cut the bait off, remove the reel put on another spare reel and keep going.

Re: Baitcaster tips
how often do you really get those nastiest of backlashes?if you've been using a b/caster long enough you will hardly ever get on like that.i've only had it happen a couple times in all the years i been fishing.i simply put that rod down, grab another and keep on fishing.straighten it out when you get home.why waste good fishing time picking out birdsnests?
that's another reason a lot of us carry 20-30 rods in our boats. |

Re: Baitcaster tips
I used the tape trick while learning to cast baitcasters, it works realy great, saves alot of time and money. The only problem was to put the tape deep enough into the spool - to shallow and it jerks your casts back and if it's to deep you still get decent overwinds.
I still use it when fishing weightless in strong wind |

Re: Baitcaster tips
Ah, the baitcaster, lol.
No other type of reel has been the subject of so much controversy. With today's reels, with magnetic brakes, and now microchips, backlashes are a thing of the past. If you still backlash a baitcaster, its real simple. You don't have your brakes adjusted right, you are trying to throw it to hard, or your lure hits a limb soon after you cast it, lol. In all seriousness, anyone can throw a baitcaster, with any type of line, it just takes practice. Adjust your brakes appropriately, and practice. Yes, practice. Get out in the yard and cast, then cast a little more, and then cast more. Not only will you become better with a baitcaster, but your accuracy will improve as well. Today's baitcasters are a breeze compared to what I learned to cast with. Good fishing. |

Re: Baitcaster tips
Nothing like having a spair reel. I carry three. Just in case.
The backlash that I was talking about is when something interferes on the BACK cast. I.E. a tree hanging over (that you forgot about ). Your partners rod, in the event that he has it in your way. Once again with out you knowing about it. Or even your partners hat ! If you of course didn't know about it ! |

I've used that tip on mono before but not on braid. Works good on mono, I'll have to try it on braid ;D

Re: Baitcaster tips
Found this tip last week while I was doing some surfing.
Sure wish I would have seen this tip when I got my first baitcaster. It would have saved me alot of time. |
