Default Under the highway + Cheap rod guides

Hey all.

There is a lake that my dad and I usually go to when we take the boat out. There is the launch and then a small channel leading to Lower Nemahbin Lake, and one leading to Upper Nemahbin Lake. Above the channel is the highway. There are the pillars holding the highway up, and you can't even stand, because you'll bump your head on the bottom of the road. What would you throw by the pillars? I know there are bass there. I've seen people catch them at night there.

I really hope this is just a result of buying a cheap rod. My $25 rod is already getting worn down from the line rubbing the guides. It can't be from braid, because I don't use it on my crankbait/spinnerbait rod. I was just afraid that it might happen to my $140 rod.

Thanks all-

Julien

i would use jigs around those pillars... and that is probably because its a cheap rod, your 140 dollar rod should do that.

Julien, Your good rod has better guides on it, even braided line won't effect them, that is the thing with buying cheaper rods, they serve a purpose, but they are not built for the long haul.I would try a silver Buddy , or some type of metal jigging spoons, jigs, or tube baits, senkos along the pillars. be careful with braid, most likely you will snag into something arounfd the pillars, so count on losing some lures.Make sure you have something like a stick to wrap the braid around to pull your lure loose if it gets stuck. extreme pressure can bend the spool shaft, or even collapse a whiffle spool if excessive force is put on it.P N J

You mean if I get snagged, I shouldn't try to yank it off? I'm sure you've tried this, but when I can't get a lure un-snagged, I keep my thumb on the spool, and just walk backwards so that my line snaps at the lure and I don't waste line. Is this okay to do?

It will work with mono, but braid isn't that easy to break. P N J

JOOLEYEN!!!

Remember Robin Hood...Remember Robin Hood...Remember Robin Hood!
I told you how you might free a lure rather easily when using braid.

That is all.

I figure that this is a pretty good tip... If you do that same motion, only extremely slowly, most of he time your lure will come out, if you have good line. I get %95-%98 off the lures that I get hung up, and I use 10 lb PLine. I know it is off topic, but it can save you a ton of money that you would have spent replacing lures.

Yes it is possible to bend the spool and shaft with braid. Depending on the amount of pressure/lb of braid.

if you use braid bring a wood dowel and wrap the line around it to pull snags loose.this saves rods and reels from damage.it also prevents you from getting cut by the braid.

Thanks all. The dowel sounds better. Safer for me and my gear.

I would use a drop shot senko around those pillars. I would use varying leader lengths (up to about 2' - longer than that, you cant cast it) so you could fish up the side of it a little ways. Also, would try a jigging spoon, a pnj and slow rolling a single bladed spinnerbait.
