				 | Carpeting a boat

I got my boat all ready to go now , except for the horrible carpet , I already have the carpet and the glue... now should I take the front and rear deck off to recarpet them , or just tear off the old and lay the new and trim the excess ? If I have to take the decks off that will not be easy , the back deck looks very hard to get off... its an 88 bass tracker. Thanks....

One word of advise. I just finished a buddy's of mine boat about 1 month ago. was half sick for 2 weeks. The crap that can accumulate under boat carpet is REAL UGLY. Wear a dust musk at least.

cmorg, I did my tracker not long ago, and heres a tip that can save you some hair tuggin. Heat gun! use it to soften the glue and remove the old carpet, then use a scraper to "knock down" any high spots in the glue after you have it removed. A putty knife is handy to use to tuck the carpet along the edges before trimming. It wasnt all that difficult a project, more time consuming than anything. Good Luck Recon

Good advice Recon.. I did the 3 doors on the rear deck already.. It was pretty fast and painless , looks good too... however the carpet I ordered was a few shades darker , so i have to redo the whole thing now... I just pulled and pulled and gave meself a hernia on the old carpet , wish you could have told me that sooner.... |

I used to lay carpet for a living and Recon has the right idea for glued down outdoor carpet.

Best choice you could ever make. Carpet is the number one reason for rot in boats.. It is hot under foot and it retains catfish buggers.. Capt Mike
