Port aransas 8-6 through 8-9
Got out with my dad for our 7th annual father-son fishing trip to Port Aransas.
Day 1 The damn alarm didnt work, so we woke up at 8:00 am and decided to go fly fish the bay. Got a few dink skipjack and dad got a nice red hookup but it broke off about 2 minutes into the fight. Later that night we go to a lighted park pier to fly fish once again and got a few dink trout. Dad with a small trout on a 8 wt. trying to make it look big lol Dink trout on 5 wt. day 2. Alarm works!! With the SSE 15 mph wind and horrible comditions, we get the boat to take us over to the North Jetty, where its beautiful conditions because its sheltered. Soon after I get this nice redfish kingfishing. I then see a king sky rocket about 10 feet from the rocks, so I pick up the 7500 with a big rattletrap and launch it in the fishes direction, and he eats! But, about half way through the first smoking run he spits Dont know how with 2 deadly sharp hooks and wire but all i get back is one damaged lure. About 10:00 tarpon start rolling in the channel, but are finicky. After an hour of throwing baits in their faces dad soon hooks up. throws the hook on the second jump A while afterwards dad catches this 4 pound spanish on a 5 inch mullet with no wire. Tried to get a pic of tarpon rolling, look hard and you may see. they were rolling constantly for about 2 hours, then dissapeared. Day 3 When we arrive on the end of the North jetty, king are busting LY like crazy. Dad hooks up with a nice one, which breaks him off after 5 seconds. Tarpon are still rolling everywhere, but are tight-mouthed once again. Dad gets a hit on a 7 inch mullet, and no tarpon but it is a HUGE SPECK!!! 7 pound speckled trout! I then catch this small spanish No tarpon this trip, but still had a great time! tb |

What a trout!!!! Jeeze you catch bigger fish than we do out in the boat fishing flats. Biggest trout I've pulled in about 5lbs. Although we have you beat in the shark category, with an 8ft bullshark somewhere over 100lbs.
But that looks like an awesome fishing trip. Did you keep the fish?

We kept the trout and the spanish, eating it tonight. Our biggest shark is a 6' 2" bull from the beach. Its hard to get to do it all with only 3 days of fishing, so we didnt get to shark fish this time. we may get the trout mounted.

Nah, it went 15 pounds and 33 inches ( 20-28 ). Had I caught that trout it would of been a world record in my age group My biggest trout is only about 3 pounds.

Tex, looks like a great trip. great to see a father/son combo out enjoying time together. Those break offs must've been heartbreakers! Congrats on all you did catch!

well shoot I sure do have a good chance of getting that record then, becase I'm sure to catch a few more big trout in all the saltwater fishing I do. We usually average atleast 1 5lb'er a trip. What would you have to do in order to register/officially weigh a possible world record and what not?

if you are 16 or under, then you can beat her record. It'll cost you some money to join IGFA and stuff, but it would be well worth it! |
