Trolling

Any advice for trolling at about 10 mph in the morning? Baits? lures?

at 10 mph?? umm good speed for kings and whoos but tearin by-too fast- any fresh water fish..

I troll no faster than I can achieve in a fast retrieve usually. Lately I have been trolling with large spinnerbaits for pike and catching bass instead. Go figure. Now out in Lake Michigan. a faster trolling speed is often used for steelhead and salmon. They however roam in larger, faster schools searching to ambush prey in open water. A faster moving lure often works well for those species. Inland lake species can also be "triggered" into hitting a faster moving lure when trolling, but 10MPH seems too fast to me.

10 MPH is way to fast for bass. I troll at 5 MPH TOPS, and thats if the bass are very active and schooling. What I normally do, is set out a couply of rods with crankbaits on them, one deep, one medium depth, and make my way through every inch of the lake, or part of the lake. This way, if i find a nice school, i can go back and cross them once again, which more times than not results in alot of bass.

Maybe why I anit ever caught a largemouth trolling.I have caught alot of smallmouth trolling between 0.7-2.2 mph when fishing for trout and salmon.

The way learned how to troll for Bass was from a canoe. Might find it weird but when heading across the lakes up here from portage to portage I would let out 50-60 feet of line and troll from the canoe. I thought to myself if I'm going across a lake might as well have a line in the water, theres nothing to lose right? Well it payed off every time I caught Bass in 80 feet of water to 6 feet of water. It seemed to me that how ever fast you could paddle a canoe was the perfect speed for a bass to follow and hit a lure. Most time I put a 1/8 Oz jig head on with a pas tic grub twister tail on and got great results. Also in deep water putting medium diving cranks on also produced great sized fish for me. At this speed a grub twister tail (smoke color) in clear water looks like a leach swimming along at the perfect speed.

So if anything the speed you paddle a canoe (nice speed not full out) would be a great speed for trolling I would say 2 to 4.5 mph.

WOW 10MPH, We don't even troll that fast for Kings/Dolphin. Maybe for some Wahoos and YFin Tuna.

I would recommend to faster than 2mph. Haven't had any luck faster than that, but considering 5 on my trolling motor only 3.7 that may be part of my problem with faster speeds.

we troll for walleyes and its a snails pace. I prefer any black and silver crankbait like a AC shiner, or anthing about 3 inches long and slender.
The more line you let out the deeper it goes. A lot of times you 'll end up dragging a small fish around that you didn't even feel hit.

Like everyone else said, 10mph is way too fast. We troll around 4 for Muskies. We rarely troll for bass for two reasons. one, we don't have a boat, and two, the guy we go with likes casting and it's his boat. ( I tihnk casting is better. When we troll though, we use crankbaits.

what about 5mph? Does live bait work? I use a 3in baby bass med crank, and a 5 in rapala deep runner shad? No luck for the past 3 visits (trolling and regular fishin')

Trolling.....we use 6 lb test line and 100 series Bandits in 10 to 12 feet of water at about 1.7 to 2.3 mph......if the water is deeper, we use 200 series.

Stevo, sound slike you've got an obsession with trolling fast. Why? Like I said before the fastest we troll for muskies is 4.2-4.5mph. We also troll about 1.6-2.5 for walleye Depending on conditions.

Livies will work but you will troll 2mph max. We do it down here for Kings and Cobes, basically you just want to lead the baits in the direction you're going w/o putting to much pressure on the baits.

We also do whats called "bump" trolling with livies, which is knocking the motor in and out just enough to keep a forward motion.

If your trolling that fast you are only going to catch them when their naping and hooking them in the sides.

I have caught about 7 bass trolling at 10mph..... so IDK how fast should I go for bass then???

granted...the right speed will change day to day and sometimes hour to hour. but 10 mph is way too fast! but as for baits, just experiment with different crankbaits.
