A new season

Well, old man winter has plowed into the region and the lakes are freezing over. Time to shift gears for a while. While bass fishing will go on hold till spring, it is a good time to get out and try for some steelhead if your lucky enough to live near waters they inhabit. Luckily, I have several in my area. I thought it would be fun to share with you a pic of the largest steelehad I have taken. It was caught on July 4th, about 12 years ago. It weighed just under 22 pounds. I just missed the state record at the time by about a pound. While this fish was taken in July, the winter steelhead fishing can give anyone a thrill of a life time.

That is an awesome fish.

A fish of a lifetime to my standards.

I love hooking up with a steelhead.We call them Rainbows here, except when on the salmon river. I have had poor luck boating anything of the size over 8 lbs. The reel screams as line rips off the spool , they make a Couple of jumps and usually they are gone.

They are a blast to catch. They grow BIG out here on the big lake. I live just a few minutes from Lake Michigan. I took this one off the pier in Michigan City Indiana. They are often refered to as fresh water tarpin here. Once they smack your lure, they really can tear up the water and rip off line in a hurry. Imagine standing on the walkway of the pier, and actually looking up at the steelhead leaping out of the water! They can easily reach enough height in their jumps to reach your eye level and above. Hook into one and your likely to get several jumps like that, as well as lots of tail dancing before ever nearing your net. I've seen numerous fisherman end up with broken rods who came ill equiped to fight a fish such as this. They are a pure blast.

Man I wish I lived by some steelhead.

Down here in Alabama, a lot of fishermen turn their attention to fishing for jack salmon (the local name for sauger) as they make their runs up to the dams on the tennessee river.

Thanks for the ruptured blood vessel in my eye from laughing... that was great! It mkaes me think we ought to have a thread for posting badly faked pictures....
