Default Help, I think my baitcaster is sick!

Well, I went fishing the other day and was doing great, caught 12 LM Bass, and a couple of those were 4 LBers. But about halfway through, I noticed that my baitcaster, after I reeled it in, was not working right. Here is the problem:

After I reeled it in, it would not stay "locked" and the bait would just fall or get swung into the brush or grass. In other words, after you cast it and turn the crank and lock it to start fishing, it is not supposed to slip. But it was. Not after every cast, but enough to annoy me.

After I reeled it in, I could reel it a little forward, and go the otherway backwards and it would slip some. Now I am fairly new to fishing and especially baitcasters, so any advice I would really appreciate. It is a Diawa Samurai left handed (I know, that is my first problem) baitcaster. I love the rod and reel, just wondering if I am going to have to go out and buy a new reel soon. Thanks.

Contact Joe Arnold in Yantis, TX hilljumper@peoplescom.net . For $15.00 plus shipping & parts, he will clean and repair your reel like new. I have sent him several reels that I thought I would have to throw away, and he sent them back in great working order.

If its what it sounds like, its a very common and repairable problem. Its still early in the morn so I can't remember what the part is called, but there is a little clutch type thing in the reel that tends to get worn out. If you use one enough, it will happen. Take it to any reel repair guy and they should know how to do it - or it can even be done yourself. PnJ will prolly be able to give more specifics if he sees this.

I haven't seen a Daiwa samurai in years. They were my first left handed baitcaster. I would guess your reel was used , when you got it ? It sounds like your one way roller bearing is slipping. It may have gotten excessively wet, or it could be dirty, or worn from use.I would guess wet, did you spray the reel down with any kind of line conditioner, or wd-40, or accidently dunk it in the water you were fishing ? Thanks, I might have to make a trip up to see him.

I bought this rod and reel from Dicks brand new last May.

And it was not dunked in the water and I have not oiled it or used line conditioner, but I did fish in the rain recently so it did get a little wet.

moisture should not hurt the reel, I believe your reel has some issues, and John should be able to help you out. Bring your receipt because there may be a factory warranty that could be applied.

Its a new samurai last May ? Then its not an 5 bb, old power mesh reel, No clue as to why they rename a reel after the older reel models.

Bobby , on the contrary, moisture can hurt a reel, depending on the circumstances involved.

I took the time to search this new samurai reel out.I found it on ebay. It is sad, when they take the name from an older decent reel and rename some other product with the same name ? I guess not many people would be familiar with the old samurai, if they were buying a new Samurai.

For what my opinion is worth, you would have more money in it than it would be worth, if you drove up to Johns shop and have him repair it. It isn't likely that John is going to repair it for free and the cost of gas is getting more expensive by the week. Of course it goes without saying, I am not always correct.

Another alternative is that I send you a one way roller bearig from a Daiwa procaster reel and see if it fits.I think it would, but have no way of knowing, since I have not seen the new samurai before. I will send the bearing to you, free of charge. I am not sure it would help, since you most likely don't have a schematic sheet that came with the rod and reel Combo ? Let me know by instant message , if you want to try it, I seriously doubt the wrranty will stand, most likely Dicks will tell you to send it in to Daiwa which would put you back to costing you to prolong the life of the reel. Sorry, I wasn't more help, I was trying to deduct what could have made it quit working. The one way roller bearing in the reel prevents the handle from turning backwards. P N J

It could be that the pinion gear has a chip on the spool side. Did it make an gear grinding sounds. It is not a horse with a broken leg so you can't shoot it. I hope that you find a repair service for the "reel" answer. Good Luck!

Thanks PNJ, I will send you a message.

It is not making any noises that would make me think that something is definitely wrong. I used it the other day and it worked a lot better, so I think I am just going to use it until it does die and then get a better one from Bass Pro shops.

Thanks everybody
