Last summer I bought some Norman DD22 crankbaits. As anybody who has ever fished these things knows they really wear you out after a little while. I have a BPS Extreme 5.4:1 reel that I fish these with but after about 15 minutes I'm done. I looked at getting a David Fritts 4.7:1 reel for fishing deep diving cranks but they don't have them in left hand retrieve which I prefer. I was wondering if anyone has ever tried to change the gear ratio of one of their existing reels? Most of the BPS reels innards are the same. I was wondering if I ordered the gears for the David Fritts reel could I swap them out and make my Extreme reel a 4.7:1?

BPS has a reel repair service. I would think that if you called them, they would be able to answer your questions, and maybe even provide you with the parts you need.

What Keith said. Not sure you can but it doesn't hurt to ask. I use that David Fritts reel and it makes a huge difference in those big, deep runners.
If you can't change the gears a 5:1 will work. I throw smaller deep cranks-Norman Deep Little N, Bandit 300-on a 5.2:1 and it doesn't wear me out, but then I'm not throwing a DD-22 on it.

Did you know Quantum still makes a 3.8:1 gear ratio ?

Thanks guys. I think I'll call BPS and see if I can't get the gears.
PNJ you bring up a good point. I've just been looking in the BPS and Cabela's catalog. I need to get on some reel manufacturers web sites and see what they have in their whole line up. I may find what I'm looking for.

WEAVERML,
Something that may be cheaper and work for you is to order one of the longer crank handle from BPS for $9.99. The longer handle would give you a better leverage advantage, and would be cheaper than changing gear ratio. I just contacted Joe Arnold at Armadillo Reel Repair about changing one of my Shimano Curado reels to 3:8 ratio to use for deep diving crankbaits. Joe advised the parts would probably cost around $30.00, plus $15.00 to clean the reel and install the gears. JackL

ABU has made one as well as the Quantum. It's called the winch.

Great advice JackL. Sometimes I have a tendancy to try and make things harder than what they are. But at least I know that if I do want to change the gear ratio there are guys out there that can do it.

http://yhst-61468208444928.stores.ya.../shcubare.html In order to change gear ratios in a reel, you need to be able to exchange the pinion gear with the ring gear. What I mean is the pinion gear needs to be the same length and design as the original pinion gear, in order for the reel to function properly from its original design. It would be a neat deal if a specialized company offered a wider range of gear selections that would fit your preferred brand of reel. I do not know of any at this time. ![]() |

PNJ,
You would think that with as many things that have gears in them you should be able to find some somewhere that would work in changing the gear ratio of your reel even though the gears weren't intended to be used in a fishing reel.
