bad conditions
Ive got a tournament this Saturday. The weather people are calling for it to start off with sleet and snow in the morning turning to rain later in the day with a high in the low 40s. This might not be a bad thing for the fishing, but it sure is going to be cold. I'm just gonna put on my rainsuit and hope for the best. Any tips on how to stay warm and dry would be GREATY appreciated.

i know this sounds silly and overboard, but, you might want to invest in a wetsuit. i know, i know, silly right? but think about it... it is made of rubber and so it should hold in heat and it is waterproff. if that is too far fetched. try wearin panthose under your clothes, helped me in the old days. just don't tell anyone you're trying to be like joe nameth, lmao.

i have a ranger boats 120 mph rainsuit i don't recall who actually makes it but it is awesome! a guy i know that fishes proam fished a bitter cold tournament on lake of the ozarks last year and he took a weight lifting belt (the kind that goes around your waist) and put handwarmers inside it. he said if you get the handwarmers over your kidneys you will stay warm with no problems. i haven't tried it but it might be worth a shot.

All the extreme survival experts say to keep your blood warm more than anything else. Or cool, if you're in a desert or whatever. They recommend putting a cold cloth on your neck to cool the blood in your carotid arteries if you're in danger of over-heating. I figure the reverse would be true, also. Get a scarf or something and put some of those handwarmers against the sides of your neck.
I've had no experience with this technique, but hey, can't hurt to try, right? |

some kind of face mask will help when you are running down the lake. i have a save phace but a paintball mask is cheaper and would work ok.

Last year we encountered a day in the 40's and we had some flurries...my brother is my partner and we talked about what to wear and ended up wearing our snowboarding gear, the pants were perfect(lots of pockets, plenty warm enough and DRY!) The jacket was great when we were cruisin along, but I had to change out to my rain jacket once we stopped, my boardin' jacket is just a bit on the heavy side....just my .02 cents.

Man, to me "bad" conditions mean warmth & nice weather ..... every single pleasure boater, jet and water skier comes down to the lake to practice their "sport" .

bring a couple pair of gloves, I'd have coveralls and a rainsuit. Maybe a rogue over 10 ft of water..

A couple of hand towels stuffed in zip lock bags to keep your hands dry as you fish.It sounds stupid, but it really helps your comfort level if your hands stay dry when exposed to the cold.I prefer layers of clothing, with a few extra on hand if needed. You can remove a few if needed, but if you don't have enough, its a long miserable day. P N J

Wear warm boots. If your fet would happen to get wet or cold then you will lose body heat more quickly than if your feet are nice and dry and warm.

Saturday Im fishing a Winter League tournament. We are expecting a high of like 30 or so, and winds around 12 mph, also last I heard was slight chance of rain/snow. Not too mention we are having a winter storm at this current time, ending tomorrow. Its gonna be very cold. I am gonna look like the stay puff marshmallow man. My only advice, is coffee. Lots of coffee. And hand warmers.

Definitely bring at least two pair of gloves. Never know if they'll get wet...

Cold Gear Under Armor is the ticket. Also a pair of insulated Gore-Tex bibs and parka. Worked for me in a snowy tournament last year. Good luck!

Spiffy. Can't wait for tourneys to start up here, my buddy and I are fixing to play around on the local circuit this year, and see how far we can go.
Meanwhile, I saw that the river up here had open water, and them there steelies are hiding up in that shallow water. They ain't bass, but they do take the edge off... LOL, that and they fight like the devil himself... maybe I'll chuck a few tubes in and see if the smallies are on the move yet. Congrats. Hope you had fun.

Congrats dude. I took second in my tournament yesterday as well. 1 fish for 1.96 lbs. Water temps were 37-38 all day. Winners had 4 fish for 6.08 lbs. I hooked our keeper on a bladebait. Next one is on March 1st, and cant wait.

Good job, kicker. $550 is a lot of gas... ok maybe not a LOT, but you see what I'm saying.
Powerbass, that sounds like a tough tourney. Let us know how the next one turns out. |
