Too smooth cork handles

I have a 7 foot medium heavy casting rod with a straight cork handle. Over the years, this cork handle has worn itself smooth to where it is harder to hold a good strong grip. It's too slippery in the hand. I was wondering if anyone has any tips on what to do about this situation. I was thinking about maybe wrapping the cork handle with a grip tape such as that used on baseball bats. I'm not sure though how that type of tape would work with cork. I also was worried that it would get too sticky on warm sunny days. Or if maybe there is another way to improve the handles texture to improve the grip.

You may want to try and take some steel wool or rough sand paper and try to roughen up your cork. That might help a little.

Thanks wearver. I hadn't noticed this product before in the catalog. Looks like a good option. Just wish there was a better selection of colors.

I hate when you get a new rod and the cork has that weird, "unfishy" feel. It also seems to have a bit of "cork dust" still on it.

I don't know about tape though, it just doesn't seem right for a cork handle. Seems like it would foul-up the cork, make it sticky.

Keith,

The other thing you can try is tennis racket grip. It's very similar to the grip that Bass Pro carries and you can probably find it in a bunch of different colors. Or you can go back to my baseball playing days and use a little pine tar.

My fishing partner uses the wraps. He seems to like them, they really didn't do much for me. They work, I just didn't see a use for them. For your situation- they sound needed.
