Small Reservoir

While Ice fishing these past couple of weeks with our new underwater camera, We've learned quite a lot about this reservoir we fish.

It's a rectangular, above-ground reservoir. There has recently been about 3-4' of visiblity. The average water depth is about 17' expect for one little trench like thing where a pipe leading into it is. There is NO vegetation, just flat mud bottoms. The lake is teaming with 5-8" perch with a lot of larger ones too. The bass are good sized (for around here ) too. Lots, and Lots of Craws.

So this summer, I was thinking about a couple things to fish in there. Since no boats are allowed, we will be fishing from the shore.

-- One thing would be soft plastic craws. I'd like to get some YUM Craw Bugs or Power Bait Chigger Craws and put them on a 3/8-1/2 oz jig or even T-Rigged.

-- Another thing I'd like to fish is a Rapala Super Shad Rap in Yellow Perch. We've used the 5-1/2" baits for Musky, but I figure I could pull some nice bass out of there with one.

-- I'd also like to try a Carolina Rig. What baits should i use in there on it though? Or should I just ofrget the C-rig in this reservoir?

How do these tachniques sounds for this water? Got anything Else we should try or any changes to what we will already be trying?

Sounds like you've put some thought into this. I think you'd have a quality C-rig bite with the environment you described. From my experience, the Carolina rig is pretty diverse as far as what bait to use. Try a craw in the color of the local craws or even a fluke-style jerkbait in yellow perch (if you can find it). Once ice out is on, C-rigs are deadly fished slow and you can always speed up the retrieve as the water warms up.

BigB - if you are a Yum fan check out the Craw Papi in 2.5" or 3.5". The crawdad color looks nice.

I like the Craw Papi too but I also really like the Zoom Ultra Vibe Speed Craw. I will use it by itself or as a jig trailer.

On a C-rig I like a lizard in Spring or a babybrushhog anytime.

C-rig baits? Most common is the 6" lizard. My second would be a centipede type bait. Third would be a fluke. Rest is up to you.

My favorite Carolina rig bait is a 6" pumpkin lizard with a chartruese tail.It works when others won't but it will work also when others will. Somewhere there is a patch of hard bottom.find it and you will catch more fish carolina rig near or through the trench if possible ?

Hey BigBassin, what reservoir is it? I probably know the reservoir that you are talking about, and could pm you a deatiled game plan for the water. I fish most of the reservoirs in northwest ohio.

rrw, It's the Metamora reservoir. It's about 25 minutes west of the Toledo/Sylvania area.

Like I said, it's a man made above-ground reservoir that supplies water to the town, and it's not a very big town, so the reservoir isn't that big.

The voice of wisdom, above. Lizards are hard to beat and hard bottom, rocks and stumps on points are dynamite for c-rigs.
