Go with the 22mag I am not sure you will get enough knockdown on a groundhog with a 22lr at 100 plus yards and the bullet is heavier so it will not be affected by wind so much. Marlin makes a great bolt action 22mag for a reasonable price.

Thats hard to answer tnfisherman. Without having ballistic tips or a higher energy like you will find in a 223 or 22-250 you are not gonna have the head blown off or find nothing but feathers and two feet damage, however you can punch a nice little hole thru groundhogs with a 22mag all day long if you have a good scope. hope that helps
Jerry

I wasnt aware of that, but that is good to know because with the price of ammo my Bushmaster gets really $$$$$ to shoot.

You would die. Actually, it probably wouldn't even shoot, because a long is a rimfire vs. center pin on a mag. But I'll let you try it....
For my money, I'd go with the LR, or move up to a .223......The LR is also a mighty fine trap checking gun, in addition to being legal (at least in FL) to carry at times when you can't have a rifle. (Like at night, with a spotlight.)

TennyFish,
I'm going to assume that by ".22 Mag" you refer to THIS http://www.remington.com/products/am...um_rimfire.asp rather than the old straight-cased 22mag, formally known as ".22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire or WMR. Even at that I urge you to reconsider shooting larger animals, such as coyotes, with anything other than a higher velocity CENTER-fire cartridge. Here's why: The muzzle velocity on the 40 grain bullet fired by the ".22 Mag" shown in the link is, depending on barrel length and a few other factors, approx. 1900 FPS-far slower than that of the common center-fire 22's. In fact it's about the same as the time-honored straight-cased 22mag. The ONLY appreciable difference is that the newer version offers a superior bullet design. Here's my concern: While the cartridge might be consistently effective at ranges up to 125 yards on smaller animals, using it on coyotes or similarly sized (or larger) animals may well result in wounded animals that escape only to die in agony later. This is because the already small and light bullet will not retain much energy (=quick kill capability) downrange. During my many years of in the outdoors, to include assisting folks on selection of weapon, gauge or caliber thereof, intense instruction in marksmanship, guiding and, (more importantly,) hunting ethics, I've observed more than enough to make me confident in my recommendation that you consider a center-fire cartridge for ANY shot at a coyote or larger animal at ANY range over 50 yards. BTW, if you can get THAT close to a coyote you are an invisible man! I've seen, all too many times, the results of being under-gunned AND/OR poor shot selection and placement NO animal deserves a slow painful death, no matter how many holes he's made in your pasture or how many of your chickens he's swiped. He's only doing what God programmed him to do and what human encroachment may have forced him to do. You can buy any number of decent rifles chambered for the 5.56mm NATO, AKA .223 Rem, and order ammo, such as from PMC, at prices that will make practice and hunting affordable. If you do use military spec ammo, however, use it wisely, since FMJ bullets are not generally ideal for hunting, save for smaller game and the occasional ACCURATE head shot on game such as coyotes or javelina. Thanks for reading. Lancer6 Last edited by Lancer6; 10-09-08 at 06:55 PM. |

For all that, I'll stick with the rest of my assertions. Good luck in your search and PLEASE consider center-fire. Yer Bud, Lancer6 |

Yeah man, for my money i'd go for either a .223 or a .22 hornet. .223 is a little heavy for plinkin squirells, but it'll put a hurtin on a yote or a coon......
