braided line on zebco
Anyone use braided line on a closed faced reel like a zebco? What are the pros and cons? Any tips or advice?? Is it a good idea?

It has been many years since I've used braid on a closed face reel. The particular braid I used was spider wire (wich I still dislike till this day). It did not take long for the braid to fray, and start unravelling, making casting all but impossible.
It might have improved over the years, or with different brands of braid (love me some power pro), but back in the day spiderwire + zebco = crap |

The cons ---> pretty soon you´re going to need to replace the line pick up pawl.

I don't want to start another line debate, but there's a lot of hype with braid....I started this spring with about half/half and now only have 2 reels out of about 20 with braid, since going back to lighter line and only using mono/fluro my catches have gone up dramatically and I don't have to worry about my hookset being too aggressive. In my opinion braid is great in only a few instances...topwater and heavy grass especially, but in reality it's overkill and for my own experience has spooked more fish than caught

I have not used it on a closed faced reel, but I have had difficulties where the lines tensil strength was greater than my gear could handle. I broke one rod and the drag on a reel because I was using 20lbs test braid on gear rated for 8lbs mono.

I tried braid on my open face Shakespeare reel and it was terrible - I wouldn't even consider putting it on a closed zebco type reel. IMHO, braid should be reserved for casting reels.

I've used braid (and other superlines) on open face (spinning) reels with no problems. But I did try to put some braid on an old Zebco. and NEVER again would I do that. It hung up so much. I don't know if it was the braid, or the reel, but I won't do that again.

Why put braid on a zebco in the first place?
