Reels
I plan on getting a new reel for jig and pig, worms and frogs.
But my question is whether a low profile baitcasting reel has as much power as a round, standard kind. Also My only baitcasting reel is a low profile so I have never casted the other kind so are they as easy to cast and operate? Thanks, Kyle a.k.a jig fisherman |

they have the same horse power but the round reels will hold ALOT more line.. low profiles are great i have used round reels in the past.. i don't much like them... it is a personal choice..

zooker is right, the biggest benifit to a round reel is line capacity. however low profile reels hold plenty of line for jigs so it is a mute point as far as i am concerned.
i use revos for everything except crankbaits and love them.

I like and use round reels, But it is a personal choice. put both kinds on a rod in the store and see which one feels better to you and then make your choice. Good Luck.

I started out with the round abu garcial baitcasters and yes they are good starter and hold plenty of line. It didnt take me long to figure out the teardrop low profile was more to my liking, after purchasing a Diawa low profile, and then getting Shimano ones..
All those got stolen and I replaced them with Quantum and Shimano..I think both brands hold about the same amount of line and after a lot of break offs I notice I have to add line on these spools over the summer, but for day in and day out ease of holding the reel with my finger on the line, its easier for me to stay with low profile all these years. If you are after big game fish like salmon or cats I can see where a big round baitcaster with wenching power is the way to go so that the fish won't spool ya |

The only thing I use round reels for is Musky fishing, and even then, I've got backing on the reels. If you're using braid you should not have to worry about line capacity at all. Heavy heavy mono or fluoro is worse, but you should still be fine with a low profile. For bass, all my reels are low profile, and as for brand, right now, I'm a big Daiwa fan.

I have an older 1980 something Shimano round reel that I use for my Frog fishing.
Everything else is low profile.

another good reel for quite a bit less money is the bass pro extreme. i have thrown a few of them and they are a very good reel at a good price. they have a lot of models to choose from so look around.

I have as more round reels as I do low profile reels but its by choice.I use Daiwa Millionaire CVZ reels and Shimano Calcutta reels. I have a 103 series Millionaire that only holds 90 yards of line, so all round reels don'thold more line. Round reels require less bearings to perform as well from its simple design. Less stuff needed inside the reel is less likely to be problematic over the long haul.I use 2 Daiwa and 3 Shimano low profile reels, 2 Abu torno HSI, 2 Johnny Morris reels,1 Extreme. P N J

I like Fenwick for lighter applications. I have two that I use primarily for trout. I have never had any issues with them, but have held my breath once or twice because I was sure they would break.
If you are going to throw into the weeds and stumps, I would not suggest them.
