I just bought a used Abu Garcia 5000 Pro Series. The line guide will skip or hang up on either side. Loading up the sides with line. Is thier an adjustment or does it just need cleaning? It sure makes a mess, almost like a backlash!
I'm just getting back into fishing and I don't want to ruin a good reel. Is there anything I should be aware of before I tear it apart? If needed....I located a place for parts but no reel... real information lol. |

take it back to where ya bought it, get it replaced. if it is a brand new reel, it is a factory defect. swap it out for another one.
and welcome to the best site on the web pal. there are a lot of great folks here. ask ANYTHING ya want to know about, we will help ya out as best we can. and share what you know, cuz we need help as well, lmao.

I wish I could I bought used though. Glad to be a member thanks for the handshake Bama... I haven't got to do much freshwater yet. Did hit up a local pond for some Rainbow Trout this winter. I'll post some picks later.

Check out the gear that line guide rides on. I would suspect that you either A) have a worn spot on it. B) the piece that rides in the worm gear is worn, or C) there is a lot of debris or grease on it that causes it to stick. It is a fairly easy part to remove and replace on most reels, but I can not speak for that exact model. I am sure some one like PnJ might have a better idea at cause.
Welcome aboard.

Here is a good schematic link site for you.
http://www.reeldr.com/SCHEMATICS/ABU/index.html It should be able to help you identify the part by name and part number to help you get an estimate on cost.

replace the pall. you've described a common problem with the abu garcia 5000. i carry a pill bottle with spare palls (may be spelled "pawl", not sure) and when the problem you've described happens, I insert a new pall. It's easy and the palls don't cost too much. it only takes a regular screw driver to do it. there's a little silver cap on the bottom of the worm gear/line guide with a slot for a screw driver. take the cap off and the pall will fall out. insert a new one. make sure the head of the pall is flush with the top of the cap or it's not properly aligned in the groove of the worm gear. if not properly aligned, rotate the pall until if falls in the groove and is flush.

It's paid off joining the group here,Thanks to all that replied. Cass, that was the site I had found, I was on the right track, Thanks. Jigger you described the reoccruring problem and by the way pawl is correct but who's grading this? We have a repair shop here a couple of miles from here. I don't mind the parts bite, but I was a service tech and were expensive. Thanks again guys...

Jigger is correct. Take the pawl out and inspect it, the two raised edges of the pawl wear down some, but it could be the worm gear as well. it also might be as simple as adding a shim washer to it, if you have a spare one or can get one. If you can you might be best off (as far as a long term repair goes) replacing the worm gear and pawl, and just buy a couple of shims with them just so you have on hand if needed, they ussually fit in any reel, between the pawl and the pawl cap.
