A bright red largemouth bass? I don’t mean red in hue or a lil red-ish, I’m talking about an all read bass?

That'd be a no there bob, a pic would make it slightly more believable.

I’ll post the pic as soon as I can. I just snapped a picture of it with my blackberry today over my lunch hour. I was at a little pond trying it out when I noticed something red in the water to my left. At first I thought it was trash like a red plastic cup or something. But then it moved. I was shocked to see something so rare in this little neighborhood pond. I was throwing a crank bait at the time so I tried to lure the fish into biting it but it was a no go. I just very calmly swam and eventually dove out of view. Needless to say that I’ll be at that pond everyday until I land that thing. |

Maybe it is a koi or something... There was a lake around here where visitors found a 2 to 3 foot koi in it... They think it was originally someone's pet... but anyways, koi can look red underwater

I thought about someone having placed it there. It was about a 2-3 pounder. I don’t know what a koi looks like so I’ll have to Google it. But this pond is only stocked with largemouth bass, channel catfish, and bluegill. It’s only 1acre.

Just looked up the koi. The fish in the pond didn’t have any white stripes. It was solid red. I see if I can load it up on photo bucket. It’s not a super close up shot but you can definitely see it.

Where do you live, fish4942? If it's in the Southeast, I'd say it could be a tiger Oscar or even some kind of Peacock Bass. I have seen some pretty red koi before, but I'm not sure they look very "bass-like".

It could also have been a turtle with some kind off weird stuff growing on it.... btw, this lake wouldn't happen to be next to a nuclear power plant would it? ![]()

Ha! No nuclear plants near by. This was a fish. I walked/ran up to it while it was close to the bank. I probably could have gotten a better picture but I had the blackberry in one hand and my rod in the other trying to land the lure close to it. As I said, this pond is only 1 acre and it’s at a park. It’s interesting because it sits low like in a little valley. Well, not really a valley, but you walk down hill to it. BTW, I’m in the Midwest.

Here is a link to a gold bass. There is a chance you misidentified a koi, but there are cases of red or orange or gold bass so maybe....

Nice link WTL... Very interesting... Theres a much better chance of it being that than a koi.

wtl that makes sense to me. we see things about pigment loses in every other kind of fish, mamal and humans. so why not a bass? although i would think it would be real hard for one to grow too large, kinda sticks out as a fry right? and we all know that a mature bass can't resist something that sticks out like a sore thumb. lucky fish i think to live that long without being eaten. cool though. thanks billy.

That pic is pretty close to what I saw. But amazingly the fish I saw was a solid red. I’m not exaggerating. It wasn’t a tapered red, it was solid. But I bet that was the type of fish it was. My dilemma now is should I try and get a better picture the next time I see it or throw everything in the tackle box at it to try and land it.

If you want to catch it to identify it, try a live minnow. If it is an Oscar - it will eat it without any hesitation. They are pretty voracious eaters, I fed mine goldfish. The Oscars would come up when I opened the tank lid and either snatch them up as they hit the water, or take them right from my hand.

If it had xanthism it could be all red, no problem. I imagine these fish, since they merely lack a pigment, can show varieties of different patterns in coloration just as regular bass do. Of course it could be a friggin gold fish that you misidentified, we just wont know till you catch it or show a good pic.

Koi can be solid bright red as well. Like the red on the fish far right second roww down in JB's post. We have one baby in our koi pond that is solid red like that. We had a couple more, but a lot of our fish, including all our big ones, died this winter cause the pond nearly froze to the bottom. That would be guess as to what it is though.

Also something to keep in mind. When goldfish get released into ponds and streams, they generally become much more red, depending on their diet. And they can also grow quite large...up to 18 inches I'd wager. If one of them were lurking a foot or so below the surface, you'd have a hard time distinguishing it from a bass based on size and shape alone.
