Default Canoers?

any of you guys out there canoe fish?

last year a buddy of mine gave me a one-man canoe.

it leaked a little and the metal bar that goes through it for stability, is pretty rusted. I took it out once last year with my uncle and anthony in the jonboat, and i got my stuff and jumped in it, and sank the front end of it, so i've been skittish since.
but i took it out today in a pond, and it scoots through the water pretty good.

I like the way you can manuver it and your sitting with your butt under the water level. but the bad part is if your leaning back on the little bar [ i put my life jacket over it and lean back] and you go through those pads that are out the water you brush against it all.

I paddled through the pond and after about 15 casts my spinng reel's line poofed to a ball, but thats last seasons line on it, so it was bout time.

So i decide to go paddle around the back of it, go across the dam and do some exploring.. i saw atleast 3 big fish turn right next to me or as soon as i reached them with the boat.
I got about halfway to the head of the pond and the beaver jumped in the water and it put off a wake like a speed boat as it was swimming through the water. then it stopped and turned towards me so i turned and paddled away quickly and saw another big fish turn in the water.

as i was paddling back towards the truck you could hear the beaver slapping the water. it sounded like someone dropping a weight ball in the water.

But i was just curious about how many of you fish from canoes

Its a very old school, effective way to go about it. I dont own one, but I have borrowed kayaks before and was impressed with the same properties.

The ideal would be to get a ghanoe. Perhaps you can even modify this canoe into a ghanoe as your next project (thats a canoe with a square transom and normally a 1-5 hp outboard). They fly, are very manueverarble, gas efficient, quiet and effective.

I fish in a kayak often. Canoes and Kayaks are nice. No trailers to tow so you can park anywhere, and you can fish in places where others can't.

Kayak for me to. Have a depth finder and trolling motor on mine. Although the motor is only for windy days, otherwise I switch back to the paddle/rudder.

i went back to the pond today and paddled for about 30 minutes or so , crusing and it was so much easier to get out, and take over the beaver dam, and paddle.. found a nice little creek type thing that feeds the pond, it is LOADED with fish, fish were turning and shooting by me in the boat non stop.

i'm kind of scared to fish back there with my canoe though, its not one of those stable watercraft.. may try and get the jonboat back there next week and see how that goes.

With some PVC and two water noodles, you can turn it into an outrigger. It will add a lot more stability. Heck you can even stand in them at that point.

yeah but in a situation like yesterday, i wouldnt have been able to get through half of the stuff i went through.

lilly pads that are out the water a foot or so, t
then a little slew that goes over what i used to call the little dam, then had to get out and go over the beaver dam, then i was going through about a 15 ft canal with brush on either side.. its pretty cool. if i go back today, i may take my little old digital camera, so if it gets wet, it'll be iightt

check out the molded seats at Wal Mart for around ten bucks....very comfortable and light...would fit nicely in your canoe and solve the back problem. I made a cedar strip canoe, one man, and put one of those seats in ....super comfort. You may not even have to fasten it in, should just set well without....that way you can remove the seat for hauling if car topping.

I do the canoe thing for fresh and salt. Have the comercial made outriggers and can sight cast for bass or Reds.
