Yeah I use a couple Iwata airbrushes. I also learned that the scrub my wife uses in the tub makes for a nice scale pattern. Just cut a piece and wrap it around the bait and hold it in place. I'm sure the baits will improve with each attempt.

Hobbylobby runs ads on their website for 40-60% off one item. I bought both my brushes that way. They also carry parts for them, which comes in handy.

Wow! That freaking amazing!!!!!

I would have put the bill up a little bit more, (more horizontal) though, I think it gives them a little better action, and gets them deeper, and I think it makes them more weedless!

But ya, great looking and color!

Keys, that is some amazing work there. If I could do that, I'd have a whole box full of home brews. you must feel great when you catch one on a lure you made yourself.

If that is your first attempt, you've got the skills, bro! That is an awesome job.

That is killer! Can you tell me what model airbrushes you bought? I think I myself am ready to step up to a quality airbrush.

Well done!

Thanks, Keys. I am going to look them up. So does this mean the hp-cs can't do what the bcs does? i'd really like to keep it to one airbrush.

For your first bait, that is awesome! I have been painting mine for two seasons now, you will get better with everyone you do. These are from a while back. It does feel amazing when you catch a fish with your own design.

Iwata makes (IMO) the best airbrush for small detail (I use the Revolution CR gravity feed dual action) which is what you need when painting lures. Also, a huge tip that saved me a ton of cash...you can use the cheap acrylic craft paint from wal-mart and thin it out with windshield washer fluid (the blue stuff, not the clear) it will take some practice to get the constincency down pat, but it works very well and will save you a lot of money compared to airbrush paint.

Nice job! The pics are a little blury, but overall great job.

I agree, Iwata's are THE best airbrushes made. I have a Eclipse CS, HP-C, and a Micron C+. All beyond awesome.

islandbass, the different AB's have different needle sizes, which means different size lines you can pull. It's more indepth than that, but you get the idea.

Very nicely done for your first bait.....but I was unsure if you made the bait from scratch or is this a factory bait that you repainted?.....either way I like the paintjob.....I'll be happy if my first turns out lookin that nice.

keys,

How did you like cedar? I reckon it wasn't too hard to ballast correctly? I chose balsa as my first wood type and my initial inexperience made balancing the bait a bit challenging but I figured it out in the end. After you make your first balsa bait, could you let us know if balancing your balsa plug was easier, harder, or the same as cedar? One of the beauties of balsa is it is so easy to cut and carve and they rise up quickly when at rest.

I would sure like a firetiger 1/4 OZ home-made crankbait . Do you mind if I receive a "free sample" of any of you guy's crankbaits? I'll sure put them to the test! But the citrus pattern looks superb. I love it.

Oh, and how do you guys paint these crankbaits? What kind of equipment? Do you buy "no-colored" crankbaits or make the whole crankbait out of balsa yourself? Or do you have old crankbaits needing paint-jobs so you re-pain them? Sorry, I'm a little confused!

BC,

Some people paint ready made blanks, and others build them from scratch and some probably do both.

If I am not mistaken, the one keys did was hand crafted.

Many use airbrushes to paint and until recently, I have actually used handbrushes. I am still in the research phase for finding a solid airbrush and the IWATA Eclipse HP-CS is looking like an excellent cadidate, thanks to some of the members here.
