Default mounting a fishfinder

I recently bought an eagle FishEasy 240 fishfinder, no so much for showing the fish but to see what the bottom looks like, hoping to find some nice honeyholes. Anyway, the suction cup transducer does not stay on the boat more then a minute - I think it has to do with the boat paint. I fine sanded the area, but to no avail.

Does anyone else with a portable unit have this problem? I'm really mad about this, because I feel like I wasted $170 and now have to return it.
