				 | Pre spawn bassin'?

All righty folks, so, on my last trip, I was catching a couple 3lb, 4lb class fish, and they where starting to fatten up with eggs. I was catching the lot of them on wacky rigs. But I'm wondering what you guys catch most of you pre spawn bass on, water temps are in the high 60's, low to mid 70's. So what's on the menu for the spawners in your area?

No, not sure, but, pretty darn. And spawning temps for up there would probably be different down here since it's warmer year around. ~~ After doing some quick research they do spawn between 65, and 70, but that's after the full moon and after all the major fronts stop. We've got a full moon on the 30th, and the last one was Feb 28. but we had a pretty decent cold front late Feb. So I the bass should start the full swing spawn late this month. Still pre spawn for a little bit. Lake Okee water temps are 73° right now, I'm sure most ever where else is around (with like a 5* margin of error) are toughly the same.

Ok, I was just surprised to hear of water temps that warm with the the unusually cold winter the south has had this year. Sorry for getting off topic though, lol. BB

Thanks guys, I'll be throwing some traps and big soft baits for sure! And for the early spawners I've got a a drop shot with a 6" trick worm!

Spinnerbaits might get you some reaction strikes as well. Bass get a little testy right before spawn.

I think you will find that even up north( I used to live in ohio) that length of available light or sun also has a bit to do with it. Here in Tn on ky lake water temp is behind at 48 F yet bass are all over very shallow rocky points and arnt white looking, have been up awhile. So in effect they will spawn about the same time even though the water temp is a tad cooler so long as its even close. I like using a fluke and have it nose down into the bed. |

Got a question lilmule, when they are pale and white looking does that mean that they just came from deep? My buddy and I caught around 15 last weekend on cranks and noticed they were more pale than usual. Wasn't sure of the cause but we assumed that could be it.

It can also be caused by living in shallow, clear waters

Senko's and lizards are standard baits for fish on beds. Crankbaits and traps for the ones that aren't.

You never know, maybe even a few early spawn fish. If their are, definitely try a lizard. I like to use a white lizard so I can detect if a fish picks it up easily. 5" or 6" lizards, rigged with a 3/0 or 4/0 ewg hook either weightless or with a small weight (Texas-rigged). If no spawning fish, definitely try a rat-l-trap or cotton cordell super spot. 1/4oz or 1/2oz, wounded shad if it's clear or partly stained. muddy water go with wounded firetiger or regular firetiger. or a spinnerbait. single colorado. hell there's lots of choices out there.
