Howdy all........It's been a long winter as usual here in the U.P., but we've had a crazy March and most of the snow is gone and lakes are 95% ice free. Typcially we have snow and ice on lakes well into April. Of course with the warm temps it only makes me want to hit the water. Catch and release season doesn't start here until May 15th with the season officially opening the 3rd Saturday in June. Needless to say I'm very jealous as I checked out some of the recent pics. I stopped at Gander Mountain yesterday and loaded up on tackle and now I'm simply waiting for May 15th........sigh. Anyway, I picked up a few bags of 4.5" Strike King Shadalicious swimbaits. I have absolutely no experience with swimbaits and am looking for rigging advice. Thanks in advance................

I haven't used swimbaits but I bet the big pike up there will love them as well as the bass! Also I'm jealous since we sill have ice on all the lakes and don't even get C&R in my county in NY, have to wait til late June like you.

Come to Jersey. I bass fish all year long. There is no closed season which I am grateful for. There is a catch and release period during the spawn but that doesn't affect me I release everything.

Or you could move down to nc.
You can fish 24/7 365 down here. As for the swim baits I use the pre rigged berkly power bait 4" swim baits.

Nice dude. I visit Ironwood every once in a while!
For the advice part... I haven't experimented with which works better yet. With a treble hook slid onto the main hook or not. I like weighted hooks and to slit the bottom of the bait. It makes for easier hook penetration. Also, start to rig it by putting the hook through the head and pulling it out the bottom of the head, but rather than rigging it all the way, pull the hook out and put the eye in the portion of the bait that you just pulled the hook out of. This forces you to tie the hook on after you rig the plastic onto it. If the cover is sparse enough, jigheads work well too. |
